For economical reasons, when I first fit out my 75 gallon, I bought 2 24" standard hood/light combos. I bought a double bulb 48" light strip to improve the lighting in my tank, but I didn't realize how much wider the 2 bulb strip was. It just won't fit without removing both existing hoods, but that means the light will be sitting over open water. Are there any possible solutions here? Or should I scrap the double bulb strip until I can afford a really nice hood?

With those light strips, you have to remove the hood altogether and use glass tops. Or you could make a DIY hood which will fit the light strip. Those are about the only options you have.

For a 75G - CD-114970 48" x 18"

Also, the glass top above comes in 2 pieces, for left side and right side. It's not one long piece.

I agree, try the glass hoods. We have them on all of our tanks and will never put a plastic one back on.
