new sponge filter with strange odor

Bought a sponge filter sold on ebay, which was shipped from China. It was cheap and just wanted to try it with my bubbler. However, I noticed that the product has a strange smell - kind of plastic-like but not quite. Has anyone used these filters? Is the odor safe for fish? How will I make it go before I put it in the tank? Thanks.

Link doesn't work, any pictures? Maybe just soak it some 1:10 ratio of bleach and water then rinse with Prime or another dechlorinator.

I have let it air out in my garage. Hopefully, the hot air will take the smell out. It seems to be a bit better now. Or is it my imagination??!!

Soak in a vinegar solution and rinse well, it will be fine.
