Hello guys! We've has our male platy for quite some time now and all of a sudden this happened to him! We don't know if it's fungus or fin rot or an injury but if someone could let us know what might have had happened that would be much appreciated! It's really worrying

Is he showing any abnormal behavior? And the pics don't quite do it justice. What does it look like? Fuzzy? Is it an abrasion? Any other fish with similar symptoms?

Hi Lydia he looks like something got wrapped around him which ripped his scales off. It looks as if he was 'beaten' up and a chunk of his tail is missing. Looks like a bit flaky like he's changing scales..
All the other fish are fine..

Hope you could help! Thanks very much

Sorry about your fish. What size tank and what other fish are in there? Have you noticed any aggression? Is it a new tank? Is it cycled? What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate) just to eliminate water quality as an issue.

He looks very battered, but it's hard to tell whether its' a fungus or an injury. You could quarantine him and keep his water very clean for a few days (put a heater and an air stone in the quarantine tank if you have one) and see if it starts to heal. If not you may need to consider some aquarium salt and/or medications but I'm not the best person to suggest which to use. Hopefully someone else can help further.

It looks like something tried to bite his head off! Do you have and bigger/predatory fish in with it? And is he looking any better since we last heard from you?
