Starting a 20L tank

I plan to take my 20L with me to college this year. It has been sitting unused for a couple years now. I already have the filter for the tank an it is running in my 55 now. Plus I will use 10lbs of sand from my 10gal that crashed last month after I wash and rinse it and leave it in tubberware containers in my qt tank for 2 weeks. I will add new sand to get to 20 lbs. do you think with te filter and old sand it will instant cycle the 20 when I set it up?

Probably not so much from the sand if there isn't anything in the tank to feed the bacteria that's in there but running the filter on the 55 is a good idea; the longer it runs on the 55 the more bacteria you'll have. I'd still stock the 20 gal conservatively and slowly and test the tank daily and do water changes as needed but the filter should help immensely.
