I'm not a Cichlid expert or anything but I'm pretty sure there are no cichlids that is good for a 5 gallon there's really not many fish at all that are good for 5 gallons sorry

The smallest cichlid that I know of is neolamprologus' multifasciatus at about 1-1.5" and even those need a 10 gallon minimum. There are some micro fish that only get 3/4-1" that would be better suited for a tank like that.

IMO even the smallest cichilds need more swim room than a 5 gallon could provide even a 10 is small.

It wouldn't really be ideal, they form colonies so the more room the better.

i've seen shellies kept in 5g tanks... they're just not themselves. I would agree that really, nano fish and bettas are about it for a 5g.

Look into badis or pygmy sunfish as a suitable alternative.
