New to the board. My Cichlid is having problems with it's tank. Went on vacation last month and had a friend take care of feeding. Got back after a week and the tank was very green inside, worse than I ever have seen. After attempting minor fixes (small water changes) we ended up pulling our fish (Ms Piggy) out and doing a top to bottom cleaning of the tank. Just before the total cleaning, Ms Piggy lost color, started moving slow and actually ended up belly up for a couple of minutes. Stated an additional bubbler and that seem to help her hang in until the main tank was cleaned and returned. Things seem to be on the mend for a couple of weeks and we're back to major green growth inside the tank. Pulled out/changed 20% of water twice in last week, still very green. Have done all chem strip test and everything seems to read OK. Have had Ms Piggy for 3 years and never had this type of problem. Help:nono:

Need more info
1 what is miss piggy
2 how long are the lights left on
3 what size is the tank
4 any direct sunlight on the tank
5 what are the parameters? Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
These will help us get this figured out for you and miss piggy.

Miss Piggy

Miss Piggy is an African Cichlid. Lights are on from about 6:00AM to around 11:00PM (have always been this way - left the off today and tank is greener). The tank is a 26 gallon tank and she isn't in any direct sunlight. Parameters are: Nitrate - 20; Nitrite - .5; Hardness - 25; Chlorine - 0; Alkalinity - 40 and PH Freshwater is 6.8.

Thanks for your help.
