It is bad because it is unsightly, and can also smother/kill coral and other desirable growth.
For removal, best first attempt is to increase flow to the affected area. Keep nutrients under control. Manually remove as much as you can in the mean time.
If this does not get it under control, it can be eradicated using an erythromycin treatment.
