I recently replaced a rio 600 power head with a penguin 1140 which has a flow rate of 300gal/hr. The rio was way too noisy and I did not feel it created enough circulation. It seems a big step up to the bigger penguin powerhead but it is definately much quieter. It is being used in my 26gal FOWLR. Is the flow rate of the penguin sufficient or too much? I did not want to use another powerhead because my CSS 65 takes up enough space in the tank as is.

You want to have a flow rate of 10x-20x tank volume. More for a reef than a FOWLR (reef wannabe, will be in a year or two  ).

If your fish are not being blown around the tank then you don't have too much flow :D
