What are some pros and cons? Are they worth it?

I just keep an old spare tank and then siphon water out of the main tank and drop in a sponge filter. The sponge is in another filter to keep BB alive. Doing it this way gives me the options to ise in more than one way if needed because most of the time it just sits empty

What are some pros and cons? Are they worth it?

Yes. They are worth it. They dramatically reduce the chances of infecting existing fish with any diseases new fish may carry. The only con I can think of is another tank to maintain while its set up.
