I got a sponge filter for my 10 gallon tank about 3 weeks ago and I'm new to it. I've also replaced my substrate from small gravel to medium sized gravel because I was attempting to breed danios, hence buying the sponge filter (which didn't work out) but I'm glad I bought it because I have never gotten one before

My dad said something about having to replace some part of it much like you would replace the carbon of a carbon filter. Can anyone help me with this?

There's nothing on a sponge filter to replace unless the sponge falls off somehow or becomes damaged. Sponge filters are awesome and if you do have fry you'll want to use it again.
