Empty shells may work, but remember, over time the shells will get buried under sand due to fish and water moving the sand. Moving snails are also easier to find than empty shells.

so how many blue leg hermits should i keep i got 8 of them right now

I would return all seeing as IMO snails do a better job than hermits and grab some more snails. If you have to keep hermits, I would look i the 2-4 range to keep and return the other 4-6.

Never to many snails. One emeral crab is all you need.
