I don't know about the 10 bucks per gallon, maybie this is cause I have a small tank, but just the lighting for my 10 gallon will be well over 100 dollars, throw in everything else and my setup should be 350, thats 35 bucks per gallon. Include the sump/refuge(DIY), and you got more along the lines of 40 bucks per gallon.

So far I am at just under 2k for my 180gallon with lifereef berlin system. Still need to get the DSB, live rock, heater and lights. I budgeted 3k and I think I may just barely make it for the initial set up. Well worth it though IMO.

WOW,
I thought i was getting high prices! It all depends on where you live and who you buy it from. In my experience it is way cheaper to buy online than the LFS, ebay is a treasure to have when buying things.

My cost:
2--58gallon tanks with stands
100lbs LR
4 inch DSB each tank (alot of LS another words)
Overflow box
20gallon sump
2-HOB penguin 330's
Flake food and misc supplies

TOTAL: $900
Thats for 2 complete 58 gallon tanks completely ready for SW tanks. I just purchased a brand new 75 gallon for $86, and 90lbs of LR for $300.
I built my own stand and in the process of the canopy for about $90. I suggest shopping around more the deals are out there! :D

75 gallon acrylic with blue back and built in overflow with solid oak stand and canopy on sale 875.00. lights 150.00 and wet/dry filter with built in protein skimmer 270.00. as far as sand and live rock i have no idea.

Ugh ... you're really not going to make me do this, right?

180g display
100g Rubbermaid stock tank sump
70g rubbermaid stock tank 'fuge
DIY cabinet & hood
DIY skimmer
DIY calcium reactor
DIY kalk reactor
Mega plumming (basement to 1st floor)
1,390w of MH/VHO lighting on tank, VHO (soon to be MH) on inline prop tank
75gpd RO/double-DI filter
Approx. 100lbs live Fiji, 100lbs live Marshall Island, and 150 lbs of base rock (now live) between tank & sump
5 x 350w Won Pro Heaters
Thermometer, test kits, refractometer, pH monitor ....

I know there's more ... I don't want to think about it. It's not all that bad ... I figured at last tally, about $5,000.00 (not including livestock), and about $100.00/mo in operating costs (electricity is *very* expensive here).

Yeah, ouch for sure. But of that, about $70.00 - $80.00 is electricity. The rest is salt, bulb replacements, RO/DI cartridges, etc. etc.

Going to have to sell more fragz! ;-)

aprox. 1 year old 72 gal bowfront
stand and canopy
custom sealife chiller 6 mos. old
coralife turbotwist uv sterilizer 6 mos. old
wet dry filter
ph probe
mag drive 500
sea life system skimmer
75 lbs live rock
40 lbs live sand
everything in perfect condition, purchased from a guy who got a bigger tank for $1200 (our budget was $1000) thought we were doing good, then learned we needed stronger light, more powerheads, test kits, more rock, more sand, chemicals, a clean-up crew, coral, and oh yeah, fish! that was good for about another $1000 and we still have a long way to go. electric bill went up $60.00 a month. so that's about $2380 in 3 months, all started because our baby got excited when she saw fish at the pet store! yet one more wonderful thing she has brought into our lives!

Since July 2003 when my wife bought me a 120 gallon tank I figure we have the following invested so far. We still are going to be getting a 50 gallon quar. tank, which will cost us another $1,000 at least. O-well have to spend our money on something as we get older.

$1200 Tank, stand, hood.
$300 Sump
$300 Refugee
$100 Canister filter
$800 Lights
$100 Sand
$250 Pumps
$200 Live rock (more to add)
$120 RO/DI Unit
$200 Misc

$3,570 Total

Fishfreek, It will when the wife want a "Special" looking one. Round quarter tank for the living room. Tank and stand cost $800. Thank goodness the tank is one of those with the built in sump, skimmer and overflow built into the back of the tank.
