if the water is moving at the proper speed and yadda yadda, there's a lot of talk about how amazing uv's are but in reality most of them do not work as well as they could/should.

Yea so you should get one of the proper recommend tank size or a bit less

Look for one in between 18-20w anything higher probably won't work on your tank.

most companies recommend 25watt for 125 tanks

If you go 25 then you need to speed up the gph. If you get a 20w then you need to slow it down. The slower the better as the bulb has more time to kill the ich in the column

It will kill the ich that goes through it but not the ones that don't. UV can be helpful but it won't cure a whole tank of ich.
