Ammonia is on the high level. I have a skimmer going do you just wait it out and it rights itself?

That is a good sign the cycle is ready to begin. The tank needs this spike to produce the needed bacteria to cycle. Have you checked nitrites in the tank. As ammonia drops the nitrites will rise and you are one step closer.
