Sorry to hear of the loss 
Fancy goldfish are so over bred and inbred, it doesn't take much to kill them. The combo between that and meds and parasites will weaken any fish, but we try to do what we can. Unfortunately, not every case successful. Without the meds, it'd would die from parasites. With the meds, there's always the chance of an animal not taking kindly to meds. That was like what happened with one of my room mate's cats. He had broncial asthma. Without the meds, he couldn't breathe right, but in the end the medication is what killed him. It poisoned his blood and his kindeys shut down. It was a week before Christmas and it was quite sudden and not pleasant at all to deal with. It's so heartbreaking.
