So I have a 40 gallon tank and the water already sits at 75 Fº of which is where I need it and I have a small 50w heater in it. Do need anything bigger?

Does your house ever get below 75? If not, then you won't need the heater. If it does, (say, in winter) then I think you'll find that 50w under-powered and likely to fail because it has to stay on so much to try to heat the water.

Throughout the year my house usually sits between 72 And 78
