I have had my betta for going on 5 years in a 2 1/2 gallon tank. Just keeled over and died today, and I'm trying to figure out why. He hasnt been dead for more than an hour, and from what i can see he has a strange brownish mark on his stomach. Maybe a parasite? I am very confused what his cause of death was, and an answer would be helpful. Thanks!

5 years is old for a betta. Especially a domesticated one.

I'm sorry for the loss of your little friend :(

It is most likely old age as the other people who replied said. I read a something or two online where a few people had a betta live almost 8-9 years. 4-5 years is usually the maximum age they get with proper, loving care as far as I have read.

He had a good life with you :)
