I would go with the compact fluorescent fixture since it provides more light. Definitely helpful if you have plants. Just make sure you don't get a fixture with an actinic bulb in it as that doesn't help plants at all.
how big is the tank in question? cp counts for a little more than no florescent when it comes to wpg's. actinic is deffinatly out.. 5000-6500 is the ideal K and up to 10,000K will do.. by the way GE makes a 6500 K NO bulb called daylight they have them at the walmart here in town.. I just got two four footers for under 10 bucks! I already had 2 at home.. Im going to rig up 4 40 watt NO bulbs for my 75 gallon in my sig. it should do for now.. I might be pushing needing CO2 injection though, I will be able to swing that pretty soon though.
