I've had my tank running for a year now, is it ok to add 5 green chromis at the same time or say 2 then 3. I really want them to school together will adding them in two separate times affect this?

If you can, I would add them all at once.

I did 3 and 2 and they rarely schooled together. They also started dying one at a time until it was down to one. I've heard of this happening with other people too, while others end up with multiples in schools with no die off.

Many folks have problems with schooling in smaller tanks (under 500 gallons IMO). There have been some studies as to why schooling behavior breaks down under certain circumstances.
