I was into the hobby for about 6 years and then got out for about 12 years while I moved around in the military. I have been back into it for about a year. I am amazed at how equipment has changed and evolved since I've been away. I have been hearing about refugiums from various sources. Are they necessary for FO tanks? Or do they better serve reef systems?

I'm no expert on the matter but from what I do understand they benefit any system including freshwater but they are not necessary unless you need a safe haven to produce pods for finicky eaters. The other advatage to them is you can add plants and macro algae to help reduce nitrate levels for some extra bio filtration

Fortunately, I don't have any finicky eaters at this time. Quite the opposite. I also have been able to keep the nitrates at a reasonable level my water changes.
