allaboutfish said:hmmm are they all schooling bc flames need 6 also.
allaboutfish said:yea probably id check aqadvisor first to see what else you can do i think
6-flame
6- neon
2-adf's
would be cool for a final stock, but that's if neons swim up top and flames in the middle. ive never had either so i dont know where they swim

oh yeah... btw... he started floating sideways in the cup so i tried to get him in the tank quickly... Idk if the PH was too much for him or what...
I wouldn't hesitate to try again with another betta in the future if you want to. Epecially with a drip acclimate, your pH should be just fine for bettas. I have kepts them in a wide range of pH's and they are very adaptable.
I do think your boy had swim bladder disease. This is very common with bettas. The lfs usually feeds them freeze dried bloodworms which only increases the chances that they will already have SBD when they get to you. Feeding a few peices of shelled boiled pea once a week will help prevent this, and also help treat in the event you have a fish with SBD again. FWIW Petco will refund your money if a fish dies on you within 30 days. Also, I would only add MelaFix to a bettas water if it has fin rot/tears, and then it's best to use 1/5 the dose, or to be safe, just get bettafix. MelaFix is 1.0% Melaleuca and BettaFix is 0.2% Melaleuca.
I'm sorry about your bad experience Don't give up though! I just can't rave enough about bettas as pets. They are like puppy dogs. IME they really enjoy your company in a way most fish do not. I think I have 13 in the house right now LOL
siva said:lol I freak out too AND actually, I have to say, the three of my bettas that were in the $15 range, came to me the most healthy, almost makes me wonder if they were cared for better (atleast before they got to the petco) so I wouldn't necesarily steer away from them if you see one that you have to have. ALSO ask your Petco what day they get their bettas and visit on that day. I almost always buy my bettas the day or day after they came in. Unlike the fish in the tanks that may do better if you let them settle a while first, the bettas are quickly fed the wrong foods and left in foul water so it's best to get them right away!

No you weren't! It was just bad luck No prob..I'm a bit betta crazy lol so happy to help
I rescued a betta that I had to take home on a BUS lol. A school bus with loud, rambunctious seventh graders... And other then some fin rot... He's been great so far! So I doubt that was it. Lol. Then, after I got it home, he had to sit in the dark for 6 hours while I coughed up the courage to tell my mom... They can put up with A LOT... Except what the pet stores put them through. Don't worry. It wasn't your fault.
