new animal planet show = tanked

I'm excited to see it anyway...knowing that they did do cycling to make the process work is enough for me, I don't need to see or hear about it. I want to see the crazy things they turn into aquariums!
 
I agree with DrConnie. I'm sure they will eventually cover it in a minor episode at some point. The main focus is about tanks. They want crazy tanks and all saltwater because well that's what is going to draw in viewers. I don't know if anyone wants to see a show about fishless cycling...maybe us on here, but not the general public.
 
The thing is, they don't even mention cycling at all and they appear to introduce a boatload (I'm talking multiple shipping boxes) of fish at once the very same day they do an install. I'm guessing they must use sand from an established system and media from a mature tank, but I don't know for sure. Even if they would just mention that they cycle it some way would improve the show immensely in my eyes.

I agree completely. My 8yr old and 7yr old are very excited to watch the show and are looking forward to the 19th!
 
They have to keep it interesting and the show is what, a hour long....not counting all the ads!! Not the best way to view SW but neither was "Finding Nemo". It's intertainment, but like "Finding Nemo" people will probably get a tank and fill it up with fish without researching first. At the beginning of the show they should say "don't try this at home"!! :)
 
A word of caution. I have read many similar conversations like this before discoverys "storm chasers" came out. Fellow chasers where all excited about it and where looking forward to a good show. Then of course a bunch of "yahoo" chasers started showing up after watching the show and thinking that it is a good idea. Putting lives in danger as they crowded the roads and blocking off escape routes, never mind the danger to themselves for not knowing what they where doing. As time went on more and more chasers are hating the show because of the negative affects on the public, and has caused many debates and way to much drama(more than you can imagine). My point is, we will all eventually look at this show the same way, just try not to focus on the bad parts of it and admire the awesome tanks they build before we all hate each other.

You are completely right!
But the problem is not that people endanger them self: the problem is that other creatures get hurt.

I am looking forward to the show, and am excited what crazy things they will be able to come up with BUT it worries me what reaction it will have on our hobby and the creatures involved...

Well, whatever will come: me and my boyfriend will watch it and we are excites ;)
 
I am also worried about the reaction as well...many people dive into this hobby without knowing anything, especially into saltwater (think of the effect Finding Nemo had), and it puts wildlife populations at risk. Maybe not for freshwater because nowadays they are captive bred, but for a lot of saltwater fish they are still caught in the wild, and so are corals, which can devastate the ecosystem of the habitat.

That's exactly what I mean... So that's why I think it would be nice if they would at least stress that issue once in a while. Of course I dont want them to talk about cycling all the time, but at least mention that it needs more than just salt and water to make the fish and corals happy
 
id have to agree that they should atleast make a statement of it anytime a new tank is being installed, that way if a noob is watching and wanting to setup a new sw tank, they will atleast hear the word cycling. But unfortunately for us true hobbyists, the show is more than likely going to just massacre this hobby and completely mess up the thoughts and views of our hobby...because granted its a tv station and they are in business to make money, but fancy, flashy, shallow shows are the craze nowadays.. how you think the automotive tuner industry felt after "pimp my ride"?
 
Sneak peek was great I also watched the top 5 tanks very cool as well can't wait for it to start and don't bash the show before it starts it might get more informative as it goes along they are just grabbing people's attention right now and if people want to just grab fish salt and water and think they will have a successful tank that's there problem
 
I doubt they are even thinking that people will be that stupid, But I agree they can be.
The producers of the show are most likely thinking that Tanked will only appeal to those of us already in the hobby. Not people that don't know anything.
The problem is that people that have been interested for years but have never done anything about it will watch the show to learn how it's done. And that's not what the show is about. It's not a how to show, at all. It appears to be more about the end product, not the process involved.

If you'll enjoy the show or not, depends on why your watching it.
If your watching Tanked to see all the different, unusual & beautiful tanks, you'll find it entertaining.
If your watching it as a "how to" show, you'll probably be disappointed and not learn very much.

It's like expecting that Orange County Motorcycle Show, to teach you how to RIDE the motorcycles they build.

Besides, considering what a long tediuos process cycling a tank is and that as hobbiests we can barely stand it ourselves how long it takes finish. Can you imagine how boring and tedious a show about cycling would be.
We'd all be sound asleep after the first 10 minutes.
 
I saw the commercial and I cant wait to watch it! The lady cracked me up, "OH MY GOD THE "SHARK STICKS" ARE NOT WORKING!" hahahah!

We need more fish shows. I love when they do the specials on National Geographic, Discovery or Science channel. I think the best was the one on the Cichlids from the African Rift lakes. Forget the exact name, it was on Science channel about 6 months ago. Looked amazing on an HD TV and gave me a whole lot more respect for the Cichlids.

You mean the BROOM handle "Shark Sticks"?

For those of you that were worried about the show not mentioning things like cycling or other proper fish keeping procedures, you'll be happy to hear that the second tanked show will be in part, about building a QT.
I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised to see the OT build on the explanation about the next show. Who knows, they may do a small part of the show on the proper cycling of a tank.
