I was thinking about setting up a 20 gallon aquarium with a pair of kribs, does anyone have good ideas for tank mates or any other useful information?

I too am setting up a 20 gallon tank! :D I am putting a pair of Kribensis in it. As of now I don't have any first hand experience with these fish. From what I have read, it sounds like while mating kribensis get VERY aggressive. If they aren't breeding then they make good community fish.
If you plan to breed them, then really nothing should go in the tank with them. If you plan to have 2 males or 2 females then they should be okey in a community tank (tetras, rasboras etc..)
Again this information is from research I have done, so it may or may not be correct, but I read it from multiple sources so i think it is correct. I am interested to see what others say :)

I had my adult pair in my 30 gallon community with kuhli loaches, rummynose tetras and amano shrimp. I would never house rummies with kribs again because the rummies require more sedate tankmates. When they weren't spawning, they were fine community fish.

I can't say how it'll work for you in a 20, there's that much less space for the adults to get away from each other when one is caring for fry.

Both my male and female were highly aggressive during spawning. The male actually attacked the female on multiple occasions, ripping her fins, etc. The female was the primary caretaker for the fry and would actively chase the male away. He would chase the fry and eat whatever he could catch.

Both adults will consume the eggs/fry the first few times until they get the hang of the parenting thing. Then typically, one adult, either male or female, will become caregiver.

These fish spawn about once per month. If you do not have a method set up for getting rid of your excess fry, do it. My lfs will only take krib fry 5 months or older, as they can sex them then. That was too long for me and I didn't want to become a krib baby factory, so I gave them away.

Would a couple of 2.5 gallon tanks be enough for the average brood?

No. They get size to them pretty quickly. You'd probably need a 10 gallon for smaller spawns and 20 gallons or more for larger.

If you have a male and a female, they will spawn. Nothing you can do to prevent it.

So... Kribs probably wouldn't be a good choice if you're not planning to breed them...

Well that isn't true, just don't get a male and female. Stick with all males or all females.
