Appreciate it. He says everything is all right. Strange how many times I've been to disney and the number of times, this time, I've watched "Nemo". That little fish has meant so much more to me now. I have shirts, pins, jackets, bags, etc, all with Nemo. Can't wait to get home to my own. Time to add a couple more corals and a fish, don't you think. Tuesday will be 7 weeks, I think.
 
I think it's safe to add now You may want to start a journal it's a great way to track the tanks progress and it helps to figure things out when the go crazy. Some of mine go back 20 years or more
 
Wow! Twenty years is a long time. I have a journal I started with my first freshwater tank. I still keep records on the freshwater side, but amazingly, not on the saltwater tank. I have a few notes, but never really got going on the sw, even though I know it will be the trickiest. I go home tomorrow, and am looking forward to seeing the tank (and the husband), so I will try to get going on the journal. Thanks for all your help over the last weeks. But don't think you'll never hear from me again. I'm sure you will on the next problem. :thanks:

Those are FW my salty's only go back 13 yrs (Journals) I have some of my dad's lot of fun reading them They used pink plastic hair curlers for bio balls lol and used to take the live rock (dead coral) out of the tanks and sun bleach it Thought it was good for the fish lol
 
Yes, we have learned so much since then, and my granddaughter will think we were in the stone age in aquaria in a few years. I would love to read your Dad's journals. They still can teach us. And I hope to be able to help people new to the hobby soon. Thanks.
 
Got a question. (yes, another one or two). What is the difference between a goby and a blenny? And, what is cheato or chaeto, as I've seen it spelled both ways. I believe it is a macro algae, but what exactly is that? Can I put it in the DT or does it only go in a refugium and why? Well, a guess that's more than A question, huh? That's usual for me. I've got to know everything!

Chaeto is a macroalgae that will take up nutrients that would otherwise fuel algae

Chaeto Goes in a fuge with 24 hour lighting
 
Ok. It is a macro algae that is only useful in a fuge, which I don't have (yet). Crazy question, but what would happen if I put some in the DT? I'm trying to grasp the significance of this.

Water needs travel through macro so it can eat nutrients putting in dt itll be all over the place on top of coral getting caught in overflow and such not real sure bout blennies and gobies i believe blennies eat algae and such i know some gobies sift sand and usually stay on bottom
 
You can float Chaeto in your DT tie it to a small piece of styrofoam to keep it on top of the water I did it before i had a sump. You'll need to trim it from time to time
 
thank you both for answering. Grizz, what's the difference between blennies and gobies as far as their behavior. and if i put a ball of cheato on stryrofoam in my DT, will it help clear up brown hair algae. i still have it.
 
I have decided to get a Bangaii Cardinal and a blenny later this week. I would also like to add a couple of corals, but there are so many to choose from. I already have a green star polyp, a Kenya tree, two ricordea, one Zoanthid, one orange mushroom and a Candycane and a torch. What else would you suggest. Remember, it's only a 28 so I can't have big ones.

Gobies and blennies both behave pretty much the same both are bottom dwellers gobies tend to sift sand and tend to hang in one area, were blennies tend to feed mostly on algae and tend to be a bit more active

Yes cheato will consume the nitrates and phosphates which will tend to help starve off the hair algae.
The Cardinal's do better in a group 3-5 but they dont swim much they mostly just hang in the water.
Coral buy what you like and frag any that get to large for your tank and make some cash back Watch those Kenya they grow like weeds lol
 
Yeah, the Kenya grew about two inches while I was gone. That's a lot for a week. And fragging....that was the only real part of a reef tank that I dreaded because I have absolutely NO idea how to go about it. To me, (I was in the medical profession) it looks like dissecting someone, cutting them in half, butchering them. Do I sound dramatic? Only because I am. Will have to look for a book on that. Can't expect you to describe the whole process for me on a thread.

Chaeto will work in a dt but not even close to as effective in a sump all water will run thru the chaeto allowing it the reduce nutrients in dt not all water will run thru it just my opinion
 
Makes sense. My sump isn't big enough. It already holds the heater, skimmer and trickle filter. Maybe in the future when I get good at this, I'll build a fuge. Or enlarge my sump. Or upgrade to a 55. Dream on.
 
I just re-read my entire thread and re-learned everything you guys were trying to teach me. You repeatedly said that Cardinals are schoolers, but I forgot it or ignored it or whatever, so I have it now, just have to come up with something else. The Cardinal looks so "different", which was why I wanted it. Will have to look around for something else small and safe and maybe even unusual. I love color. Hmmmm. Have to think about this. Along with my Blenny.
 
How bout a rainford's goby I absolutely love mine and is a decent sand sifter for his size
