They do seem off and maybe it's the picture but the males body shape looks very deformed. Genetics are certainly the most important part of quality looking fish, followed by water quality, and lastly food. The fish in question do seem to be very low grade at best from those pictures. Like anything when the demand for something increases people find a way to supply that and the result is low grade fish from constant inbreeding, which results in weak immune system, deformities, and dull coloration.
