Who among us has a perfect tank? (vent)

Hi what an interesting thread To the question on goldfish I have kept goldfish in many tropical aquariums with no problems {other than being messier}my only concern would be the long term well being of the goldfish. When i say long term i mean longer than several years!
Now to the other point in answering posts or questions? I always try and always will answer from personal knowledge or from very reliable sources,if not I will say that its from what I've read and say the source of the information. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes and we are always still learning and the internet is a fast way to learn - unfortunately anyone can join and therefore you must judge the answer and make your own conclusion,after all the final decision remains with the poster or thread starter.

Hahahaha I love it. And to answer the previous question I don't think it is fair to necessarily single out certain people on the forum who you should trust. It might push away people who are not mentioned. People who respond to a post aren't doing it for no reason...they always have info they want to share or and experience they want to share

Keep in mind that individuals you should listen to is going to vary by topic, just as some who are very knowledgable on one topic may not post in response to a question on another topic. As you are around the boards, observe individual responses, you'll learn who those individuals are who know what they are talking about and those who are parroting what they have simply heard or read.

You give great advice and when I see you in a thread I sometimes don't even get all the way through it because I know you've covered all of the bases. Personally I consider you a resident expert and am glad you contribute here.

I think the point mfd was making is that most of us have been recommending a 20g-ish minimum for fancy goldfish on the regular here, but now that it's a point of contention I'm getting dogpiled by defending it. Correct me if I'm wrong, Jon, I could be talking out of school.

I wasn't necessarily expecting anyone to bust out a bunch of science papers to try to determine that fancy goldfish would be harmed in a 20g tank, but I just wanted a little more than a 'just because' or 'well my friends friend had a fish that', especially considering that the bandwagon in this thread is going against the status quo of what is usually recommended on the forum to begin with.
I'm not a goldfish expert by any means and tend to defer to those who have more of a passion or time in study with this species, just thought it was pertinent to make example of one of the disconnects that I think was brought up in this rant.

When I give advice, I base it on what I have experienced. Like people who say you can't have neons with angelfish. Funny that, because I do HAVE neons with angels and the angels leave them alone. I would advise that it's possible to keep the two species together based on MY experience and their type of set-up.

I will also tell someone in no uncertain terms that a common pleco does not belong in a 10g tank, period. Whether they like it or not is not my problem.

While everyone is chiming in I am going to give my .02 cents. It wasn't long ago that I was new here, no knowledge, no experience. I had purchased a tank, filter, rocks, and rocks. I treated my water, let it run for 24 hours, and guess what? Bought fish. I was unlearned. I came here to learn. I started talking to people and BEFORE I learned anything about the FISH, I learned there's more than one way to skin a cat. No one cycles their tank the same, no one feeds the same, no one keeps fish the same. I became sooooo confused! I didn't know what to do, one person said this, and one person said that. So, with that said, I stepped away from this Forum and cycled my tank my way, and read on my own about how to do it. I kept the fish I wanted. I paid for it with money I had worked for so I figured I would have fun in my new hobby. I, me, my, not you, your, or y'all. Hey, if someone wants to spend money and kill a fish, it won't be the first time, let em' enjoy it. This is a great hobby and I love it, I am also a professional bass angler here in TN and I KNOW fish can adapt. I've had 7, 5-8 pound bass in a 20 gallon Livewell for 10 hours with water temps in 90's before. They came out and swam just as good when they went in. Their adaptable creatures just like you and I. God's good. Enjoy this hobby! Don't let anyone on here get to you! Realize you CAN do it your way! (It just might not turn out good) But hey! We learn as we go!

Wild temperate freshwater fish are very tough. Fancy and tropical fish are often less so.
While it is true that no one can force you to do something you don't want to do, the reason we feel so strongly about this is because we don't want fish to die uneccesarily. Learning can be done many ways. Why not learn from others' mistakes rather than make them yourself, at the expense of an animal's life?

For all of you interested in scientific data on goldfish, I came across this interesting study posted on another forum discussing the the lifespan on goldfish. While I can not make direct comparisons of wild goldfish vs their tank-kept brethren because of the vastly different environments (and zillion other factors) they are living in, the study does illustrate one focal point- while goldfish growth does slow down as they age and mature, they do not stop growing. It also points out that wild goldfish eat a diet almost exclusively of algae based upon analysis of their stomach contents.

There are a lot of incredibly knowledgeable people on this sight, many of them are ALWAYS posting, and they tend to be consistent, then there are some who rarely post on forums, but they are dead on and you should definitely take their advice..... If you just browse through the forums and read up on what type of tank/ set up that a person has or is used to having you can usually find those that are honestly telling you from personal experience and those that are just reciting. You'll also find that answer styles differ from short, curt, and abrupt to friendly walk throughs. Nobody is any better or worse and most of us started out not knowing exactly what we were doing. Also bear in mind that most people that "specialize" in one specific variety of fish keeping will be consistently at odds with another who has had success in keeping the same variety of fish in a completely different way. It's the nature of the beast. I would never dream about trying to make a list, but checking a persons profile and looking at the types of tanks that they own is a good way to get an idea of scope that a person giving you advice has on the complete idea of aquaculture. for listening.

Hi I think making a list of people/posters to listen to would alienate many members,and would prove problematic - after all who says who is an expert or some one to listen too? We all do our best but obviously some members are less than subtle in how they tell you? This is what makes internet forums so fascinating but also so confusing at times!! If the mods come up with a suggestion or idea then I think it would be very interesting to hear

That is a good idea but can lead to confusion possibly? {Its what I do, get info from several sources,my main source is my local fish shop}

To the OPs point, some people are quick to jump to conclusions. Sometimes they are making assumptions based on information that is left out. Regardless you should always take criticism with a grain of salt, if you're happy and your fish are happy dont let others ruin your party
