Day 1:

Now that I have two tanks I am going to make journals for each of them. Here is my 10 gallon:

What needs to happen: Change substrate to sand, change filter to aqueon 10, add plants, add driftwood, add rocks, add background.

What I'm doing today: Changing substrate.

Feel free to follow along! Any tips would be much appreciate thanks!

Anyone? Kind of need help ASAP because the fish are in small containers.

Gonna give a chance for the filter to clear up the water good and some time for people to respond be back soon.

Just do the black sand with no gravel. The sand will eventually just sink into the gravel anyway if you put it on top. Make sure you rinse the sand thoroughly before you out it in though or you'll have a cloudy mess :)

Btw you have a beautiful betta! I saw it in the background :)

His name is Leo he will be going in with these guys he's pretty friendly my gf gave me him a year ago when he was a baby:) I'm rinsing the sand now thanks for the help update soon!

What will work best to rinse the sand in? A big bowl or the bucket I have the gravel in?Or maybe a pillow case?

The sand is floating and there are air bubbles on the bottom with the sand why is it doing this? Should I turn the filter on?

That is normal. It is from not rinsing enough.ihad it happen to me to, just push the sand down as best you can and turn the filter on. It will settle eventually,

Pat on e air bubbles on the bottom also. :)

I think I may paint the back of the tank now before I do anything else. Do you agree? I saw you have a 10 gallon is the back painted too?

Ammonia is reading a bit high :/
Maybe I should change the filter cartridge?

Yes I do have a 10gallon :) I didn't paint the background because I didn't want it to be permanent. I just taped a piece of orange construction paper to the back glass :)

Hmm I guess ill worry about that later then. Should I add in the plants and fish now or wait until the tank is more stable? I have several different plants that all need to grow roots

Add the plants, figure out how you want to design it, then add the fish :)

I'm probably going to need help figuring which are plants that go into the sand and which to tie. I have a bit of Christmas moss I think I'll let that float for sure. The only thing I'm worried about is my current filter I'm using and the plants getting thrown around or sucked up its a tetra whisperer 30 and I have an aqueon 10 waiting to replace it. I'm just afraid of there being no beneficial bacteria in my tank if I take the filter out.

Actually for a fact none of my plants have root systems yet(they are trimmings from a member on here)!

Can you adjust the flow on the tetra whisper 30?

Yes it's on the lowest right now and it doesn't actively give much flow. I guess it's fine for now. Do you know how long until I can replace the filter? I want the aqueon 10 on for shrimp anyway.

So you have the aqueon 10 running on the tank right now to?

No I thought it was better to give the bb some time to grow in the sand before switching filters
