I am planning to get a 90g tank. I am considering bare bottom, what are the pros/cons to a bare bottomed tank?
pics?

bare bottom is ugly, you don't get the benefits of organisms in the sand and you need high flow to keep waste off the bottom, which is not good for soft corals or LPS.

the way i see it, bare bottom is good for an SPS frag tank but for a mixed reef i would go with sand, my new build i plan a 3.5-4" DSB

i dont think its fair to say bare bottom is ugly. there are some extreamly beautiful bare bottom tank. but there are pros and cons.

cons:
debris settles and is much more visible.
not as much room for benificial bacteria to grow.
limits fish choice since pod population wont be as high and sand sifters wont have food

pros:
very clean looking when maintained.
simple scape ideas.
less chance of nitrate build up
i find it makes stuff in the tank "pop" more.

here are a few examples of really nice bare bottom scapes

i am planning on doing a bare bottom tank soon. just trying to mentally build a scape before i start.

Wow those tanks are works of art! I prefer the sand just because I feel like it looks a little more natural but as mr funk has shown us bare bottom can certainly make for a beautiful tank. Good luck on your new project!

The second and third pic look really cool. Like the encrusting coral growing on the bottom kinda like you would allow gsp to grow on the sides. Neat ideas that's for sure.

I don't think any tanks are ugly, unless they've been neglected for a long time. It's all a matter of individual taste. Some people love black sand; some hate it. Some love a DSB; some hate it. Some want a more minimalist look and want a BB; some hate it. Some hate decorations in tanks, and some have their tanks jammed full of decorations. That's the beauty of aquariums: you make it how you love it.
