Betta, shrimp, guppies. Really anything that has a minimal bio load.
 
Thanks for the ideas. I went with 2 sunset gourami and some cobra guppys. Sadly, one of the gourami didn't survive. I think he may not have been genetically sound to begin with, because all params are good and the rest of the fish are fine. I'm hoping the other sunset perks up soon. He has been somewhat depressed since his friend died. They were best buddies, swam side by side all the time, slept in the same little hidy-hole.

Dwarf or regular gourami?
 
Dwarf. I think they are sometimes called honey gourami, from what I've read. They only get to about 2" as adults.

There are a lot of inbreeding of the species in the trade. They are notorious for being weak because of it. I had 1 randomly die a few month ago with perfect water parameters. Was colorful and active and the next morning was dead. My other fish Iincluding a other DG were and have been fine

That's exactly what happened in this case too. It's sad that there is such a problem like that, because they are such beautiful little fish, with amazing personalities. :(
