I would just turn the heater to 86 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 2 weeks to kill off the ich. The medicine will uncycle the tank. But, if you do use meds, then take out the carbon.

I am using meds and took out the carbon. I set the heater today on 87 so im hopi g that helps. I lost another tiger barb this morning and I have two kissing gouramis that look really really bad I hope this helps!

If I'm correct you have 87F and meds of ? in the tank?

Have you increased aeration?

From what I understand both meds and heat will cause the water to loose oxygen. Just using one method will require an extra air stone. Using both without extra oxygen is inviting death to the infected tank.

Im not using meds anymore after yesterday. They dont seem to be helping anyways :/ I have the heat on 88 now, using salt and getting an air pump thursday. Out of the four fish I have left two have the ich really bad and two dont. The two that do the spots are starting to lighten but are still really bad, even on their eyes. Im hoping thw just heat and salt will work better like everyone says. I put the carbon cartridge back in this morning after feeding.

From what you both are sayimg I think its the lack of oxygen. I dont have an air pump at all just the pump splashin cauing bubbles. But I am stopping the meds and now ising just heat. Im figureing it is the oxygen because my gish are swimming up to the top more for air.

It can take awhile unfortunately with either method. This sounds good to me. The heat speeds up the cycle so it can look worse before better. Try the heat method and see how it goes, should work but may take a week or bit more. Then leave heat up for 10 days after last spot in case it is hiding in gills, etc. with the temp increase, did you increase temp slowly?

Just in case, plants don't like much salt. How much are you using out of interest?

Edit - I have some links, will post tonight.

I dont have any live plants yet. Just starting out. And I did speed up slowly have been turning up the heat for about three or four days now starting around 74. Just hit 88 this morning. And as far as salt. 4 teaspoons a day. With only 2 today. I cant believe how much the heat helps, I would have turned it up a lon time ago. I think the biggest mistake I made of them all was not spotting the ich sooner :/

I lost a kissing gourami this morning and none of the other three will eat. I am going to put these three, if they last, in a quarantine tank on thursday and just do a complete restart. Can reused plans and decorations hold any types of illnesses?

Someone more educated than I needs to answer your question. But, I believe the answer is yes.

At the bottom I put a link for the life cycle of ich. ( it's 3/4 page down from the top of the article).

I'd dip them in almost boiling water and soak them in Clorox. Then, rinse thoroughly. But, wait for a more experienced answer than mine.
