Just had the local news on and this student has developed a self cleaning filter, don't know much about as yet, she said, no more water changes needed, I kinda like WC. anyone know anything about it...... ?Apparently, the special filter turns the fish waste in to fertilizer which the plants use in the tank, you don't need bacteria.......

I have no idea how that's gonna work, it's gonna be something amazing im sure. I do know that there is a method of filtering where you run the filter through a horde of bare-root aquaponic plants and the roots collect all of the detritus.

I added something on above after, Apparently, the special filter turns the fish waste in to fertilizer which the plants use in the tank, you don't need bacteria.......

The only thing is WC's are needed even if plants are used to absorb certain nutrients because there are all types of nutrients and toxins that build up over time that only WC's can reduce. Same as this one type of Nitrate filter you can buy that says greatly reduces WC's. It's great at removing nitrates from the water but again there are tons of other toxins and nutrients that build up.

I agree with you, I can't get my head round it but the filter is made of some type of small blocks, not like the convectional filter, she has developed a new method of filtration..... I would love to know more about it........

I must say I am disappointed, I thought we had a break through in keeping Tanks......maybe not.....

There's this video, where a guy uses aquaphonics and never does water changes. All he has to do is top off the tank. Seems like more of an effort to set up the whole thing...but still..

More of a self sustaining mini ecosystem than a self cleaning filter. Self cleaning filters are used for pools all the time. They just require a lot of plumbing and are too expensive for hobbyists to use for aquariums.

I'm waiting for someone to design trees that have self destructing leaves soon as they hit the ground so I don't have to rake them.

Interesting video, that probably makes more sense than this new invention.......

Gorgeous tank, but a bit over stated and under researched. I would buy it for its aesthetic design.

The fluidized bed filters actually do clean themselves out using nothing but an airstone.

I agree Mebbid, it is a nice design, apparently she has lots on order.........

Sorry to burst the bubble but that filter is neither new nor revolutionary. Lots of people have made fluidised bed / moving bed filters on you tube. I also made my own and have been running it in my main tank for about 9 months now.

They still need to develop bacteria. They still need to cycle, like any other media filter. They do self clean, just by the agitation action continually dislodging debris and old bacteria. After 6 months or so they can also help reduce nitrates, but not from the plastic media. This is best with porous sintered glass or ceramic media.

You still need water changes. Extremely simple to make, excellent bio filter and just powered by an air pump.

But again, is nothing new.

yeah, exactly.
I've been here shaking my head over all these excited posts over something that has been in use for many, many decades already.

Fluidized filter beds have been used in water treatment facilities for a very, very long time, where do you think the aquarium hobby got the idea from?

so it's a goldfish bowl with a filtration system.. *yawn*

Personally I think it is lame and simply a gimmick to be sold to those folks who win a goldfish at the carnival or something.
No serious hobbyist would waste $$$ on that joke.
