Does that sun sun have more power than the 306? I have a 306 on my 55 and it can't push enough water to run an inline reactor. I have an Aquaclear 110 as well to add some much needed flow but the 306 is really a disappointment in terms of power.

I'm going to be watching this very closely. It's the exact same lighting setup I'm thinking for my future 40b. I know you canned the 306 in your 36 gal, but do you think it would perform well in this tank with a better footprint?

I would say it would be very close (no reactor, nothing inline), you still may need to run a HOB.. I was only really getting ~120gph (method: timing how fast it took to fill 1 qt * 4 (/ 3600s) out of the Fluval with a reactor. So... YMMV w/o it... If you're going to do a Fluval, I would really look at the 406 or something with a stronger GPH. For me its about keeping as little equipment in the tank as possible, I just like that look better.

I also really don't have much experience with canisters, as these 3 are my first (all within a 3-4 weeks).

Thats exactly how I felt about it... $140+ for the 306 and my SunSun HW-304b is crushing it for $70 (Amazon Special). As for is it as efficent as the 306, and higher quality; that remains to be seen..

Yeah I would say so, its rated at 525GPH, but its probably more like ~300GPH, which is great. I haven't actually measured it, but the difference I feel coming out of the spray bar which runs the length of the 40 ~ 33in is much strong than the spray bar on the 306 that only ran half the tank ~18in.. The plants are gently swaying in the tank, and you can actually see the filter sucking in the debris through the intake.. With the 306 I would watch debris float around the strainer and then float away back into the tank.

Ok, Im really considering getting one and keeping the 306 for another time or maybe even hooking it up to the 10 gallon... Thanks :thanks:

P.S. The tank is looking great (y)

Reas through.... Nice work. Ive got a similar setup rolling with a 40L, minus Co2. 2 48" fnx planted+ 24:7, fluv 406, white sand, planted. Cant wait to watch your growth fill it in.

Thanks!

I really like it, no leaks and have opened it a few times now.. I am looking to keep my 306 around, might eventually try to do a 20L and use it there.. Keep that tank for HC and harder stuff to grow.. dunno..

Anyone play around with the Ehiem Skimmer? Thinking of possibly picking up 2 of them to clear up the film on the tanks.

I only run it at night on a timer, i clean it weekly with wcs.

Which skimmer?
The canister attachment or powerhead unit?
I have used the canister model and they are killer .
With either unit I think you are on your way to appreciating surface extraction.

I was looking at the power head unit.. The SunSun came with one, but its designed for their intake (which is not the greatest). I was contemplating a way to install it on DIY intake.. But still looking at all my options.

I'm really sad to hear you guys have had such crappy experiences with Fluval's 306. I tend to buy a lot of my stuff based on brand loyalty and I gladly pay more for quality equipment. Sounds like Fluval kinda crapped the bed?

Definitely not wasting time. Nope.

I love there c series and old aqua clears. But as I have read most filters gph is based on the canister being empty no media. I guess rule of thumb is 50% of stated gph. Buy mine was worse since I'm pushing a Reactor with it too..
