Question for those who dose EI:

I'm currently dosing
1g kno3 and 0.2 grams of khpo4, 4 days a week
And 0.77 grams of trace mix 3 days a weak.

I'd say I currently have medium light. (Lights running on 60% strength)

I'm considering bumping my lighting back up to 80% as my pink baby tears Are turning green because of the lack of light and I have another pinkie/red plant that I really want to make nice and bright.

So my question is am I dosing enough per week to be able to crank the light into the high light category?

Growth rate is pretty solid on my stems but I really want those bright colours!

Hi Bert.

The EI baseline values were coined by using light intensities up to 6wpg and unlimited co2. I know Wpg is an almost redundant measure now but that is still pretty intense lighting that not many of us will have.

After that, the number and type of plants will dictate whether you need more or less nutrients. Carry on dosing as per the index and observe for any deficiencies. I could be wrong but I doubt you will run in to any.

Ah awesome thanks mate! :)

I guess your constraint is going to be CO2 / higher light encouraging algae.

And maybe potassium deficiencies. I was over-dosing that above EI for fast-growing stem plants so depending on plants.

Co2 is going great guns at the moment so shouldn't have too many dramas with that. I've put it at 90% so should be about 80-90 par at substrate. The plants have already gone a darker red :)

Found a dead Cory Dora today and was amazed at the bloom of algae behind him on the glass! Was like a green bomb had gone off! I'll be scrubbing it down tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up on the potassium :)

So this is the algae I was talking about. The body was found right in the middle of this hard up to the glass.

And my big fella is loving it after his water change!

So since I've increased my light by 20% my stem plants are now growing twice as much (about 1-1.5 inches a day) and my plants are starting to really pop the colour! I'll post a pic in a few days so everyone can see the growth rate from when I replanted a week ago!

Also found some BBA on a rock under a few leaves. I've given that a good zapp with excel so hopefully that fades away. First time I've seen it in a while now.

I've completely [mod edit] had it with the HC Cuba as they just won't stop digging it out (grrr!) as fresh suggested I've ordered some stainless mesh that I'll be tieing it to and burying that in the substrate. For the moment I've just got it floating in a plastic breeding basket under the lights.

Also can u guys help me with a plant id? I can't remember what it's called for the life of me! I remember it starts with M. Haha ;) here it is here

Very interesting that. Might use that picture elsewhere at some point if you don't mind.

Finally got my stainless mesh in the mail so I tied all my HC to it and buried it into the substrate! Good luck trying to pull it out now fishies!

Tanks starting to grow out nicely, although my "pink baby tears" seem to have turned into green baby tears
:( also considering a swap with them and the red plant behind as they are growing a lot faster and taking all the glory from the other plant.

Any suggestions on how to make my pink tears go back to pink? Lights not the issue as my other plants have gone a really nice deep red.

Tank currently looks like this:

Sorry bud. I don't know how to make reds more red. You would probably need more light in the red peaks of the waveform. I don't know if there is anything in increasing light intensity or specific fertiliser that does this. I certainly haven't seen any evidence but of course this doesn't stop people talking about light or iron etc. Might be worth looking in to.

How's the mesh holding out?

Mesh has done the job perfectly! Nothing was moved over night. I think I can bump the Reds on my lights using my controller so I might try that.

Everything is actually looking really good haven't had any issues in about 3 weeks now

So the wife has rescued 7 gold fish from the pond out the front of the house that has an insane amount of algae in it and has told me I need to setup the 55g to save them :s not impressed! Will just be a basic tropical for the moment with plastic plants and ornaments. I'll go hunting for some driftwood for it but no live plants or anything for the moment. Will post some pictures up once I've got it set up.

Brings me to my question, can I be successful with a low tech planted tank with gold fish? I heard they a plant murders!

If I was to plant it id be putting in Anub, swords, maybe some crypts or vals? The hood has 1 t5 Fluorescent so that would be enough for low light wouldn't it?
