Benefits of CO2?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I'll have to ask next time I get mine filled. One guy on a brewers forum was saying industrial CO2 gave him bad headaches (and not the beer itself lol). I know the fish store gets their bottles filled at basically the same place so never looked into what sorts of bottle grades Australia has.

Being a classic over thinker, I called the store that filled up my tank. I asked if he had "food grade" and he said his is industrial grade that has been filtered and did not know of anyone that offered "food grade." He went on to say all of the corporate offices that have aquariums in them use this CO2. So I guess this is safe then. My GLA equipment should get in today so I will set it up tomorrow!

Please forgive my ignorance, but I haven't yet seen an answer to the other question. In a tank maintained at a higher temp., like the GBR tank at 82, the DO would already be down some, correct? Doesn't the addition of CO2 further diminish the O2 concentration? In a community tank, wouldn't the addition of CO2 mean keeping fewer fish? Sorry; thinking like a Zoologist here. All organisms excrete CO2 (even plants in the absence of light), so I guess I just don't get the necessity for additional.

Additional co2 doesn't further diminish oxygen levels because they are not interrelated to each other within the aquarium. Adding co2 just means adding more co2. The oxygen levels will not change because of co2. If there is little oxygen then adding more co2 will make it more difficult for the fish to breathe but that is because there is little oxygen.

In a heavily planted tank additional co2 actually increase net oxygen production via photosynthesis.

You cannot create and maintain plant growth like this by respiration alone.

There will be no shortage of oxygen in a tank with this kind of plant mass.

That is a good check. I'm going to check here locally and see what I can find out.

Good afternoon everyone,

I just let up my lights and the timer is set from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. I dosed with Excel to cover the fertilizer until I get the PPS- PRO in the mail on Monday.

My question now is what LED color spectrum should I use to really help the plants? How do I get my Rotala Rotundifolia to turn red, what colors need to be predominant?

What are the red plants in this tank?

Well my CO2 and lights are officially hooked up and running! It is at 1 BPM for now until the drop checker kicks in. I think I read that can take a few hours. I accidentally put in a little more than half of the solution into the checker so I hope that is okay. Once the electronic scale comes in the mail I can put together the PPS- Pro, so for now it is just Excel.

I am still curious of how to get my plants to turn red if anyone has any suggestions for light spectrums

I purchased 4dkh solution because I thought I would need it. The GLA Nano drop checker did not mention adding anything else, just the drops that came with it.

Okay I won't add anything then. Also, probably would have been better to ask days ago, but does the size of the drop checker matter, or will any size do for any size aquarium?

Size dont matter. They all work the same. Not a hundred percent accurate but a handy tool

Thank you for all of the help. For you have any suggestions on the color spectrum to get my Rotalia Rotundifolia to turn red at the top?

You need a little par to get tops red. Mine are red. Let them grow out. As they get near light if there enough par they will get red.

So you don't recommend high orangles, or yellows compared to blues or purples? What are those purple tipped plants? That's really pretty
