I agree, it's not about keeping the disease out it's about keeping it in lower numbers that are easier to deal with. The higher the number the more likely it is to colonize in your tank. Besides mine is always loaded with poop or the LFS gravel. Just a quick scope and go.

I feed mine once a day, just enough for them to eat in a minute or two. Once a week I'll give them a treat like blood worms. At night I'll usually toss in a blanched veggie or a couple of algae wafers for my late nighters.
That makes sense to have a good build up of organisms for them to feed on. I guess I'll just wait another six months and if I feel the urge I'll try them again. My main concern though is just how fast they died. I've never had anything die that fast, especially since the ghost shrimp have...
You can have some luck with T8 bulbs in the 6500k range from the less demanding plants, but it will be a very limited selection. What are the dimensions of the tank and what wattage is the light? Does it go across the whole aquarium?
I really don't think so, but anything is possible while I'm not looking. If I would have been a good little fish keeper I would have quarantined them, but as I stated they had been at the LFS for a month or more and I stop by at least 4 times a week on my way home. :facepalm:
I use pool filter sand in my 55 which was very easy to clean, and I use black sand that I got from my LFS in my 36 to cap my dirted tank. I have no problems with plants staying rooted in either tank. I will say that it is a lot easier for the inhabitants to uproot your plants though. My khulis...
