The stick on temperature things are not the most accurate. I would go buy a better thermometer to check to make sure that your stick on one is close to the proper temp.
you don't need to buy mated clowns... just get two small clowns and one will get big and they will pair up... I have done it twice and they are awesome.
I would put some food in the bucket and watch for it... if the thing comes out and is waving in the air it is probably a brittle star... if it doesn't come out then I would watch it at night so I could get a better idea of what it is.
