My Continuous Battle with Green Cyano

I've had some cyanobacteria in all of my tanks, and in one of them it got pretty bad. Surprisingly, I beat it with frequent gravel vacuums and keeping the lights off. No medicine needed. I'd do more frequent gravel vacuums than once a week for a while, at least like 3 times a week, and keep the...

Sick platy? or about to deliver?

Where were the worms coming from exactly? I'd imagine some intestinal worms could make a fish look bloated. Did you notice if she had a "pregnant spot", a dark spot in the middle of her body?

    Bullying!

Is it a coldwater tank? How big is the tank? Are all of the fish goldfishes? How big are they? Answers to these questions might help someone here helo you :).

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Oh no, I didn't mean to discourage anyone! Sorry about that. There is still a lot I enjoy about the hobby, and if you take it as a challenge, it'll keep your interest up for a long time ;).

    Arghhh, fin rot, etc.

Yeah, as I was browsing through a book, I started wondering if this is fungus, instead. The problem is that my LFS will be closed for the next 3 days for Christmas, so Saturday is the earliest I can get new medicine. If the situation gets worse, I'll probably try some salt meanwhile. If it stays...

    Arghhh, fin rot, etc.

I have a 33 gallon/ 128 liter tank with 5 Swordtails, 3 Platies (plus one fry), 4 Otos, 2 Zebra Danios, and live plants. I quaranteed all fish for 2 weeks before adding, and the water parameters have always been fine (ammonia, nitirites, and nitrates 0, pH a stable 8.0). A few weeks ago I...

ACK! my ghost shrimp attacked my goldfish

I think mine was also Indian Prawn. I still have one shrimp/prawn left in one tank. So far, he's much smaller in size, and his claws don't look that offending, but I'll keep an eye on him, and if he grows big/ gets aggressive, I'll have to get rid of him, too, or get him a separate tank. Ghost...

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Thanks, Brian :). Yes, Finnish is the language. Alli, good luck with fighting the algae bloom! For how long will you be gone, and do you have someone looking after your tanks during the trip? And who will "look after" our tanks when you're not here giving advice?

    dechlorinate before or after?

I use buckets, so I add my dechlorinator before. Also I prefer letting the water sit for a couple of hours, because I don't like those small bubbles sticking to everything if you put water fresh from the tap into the tank.

Stable might be better :P. English is not my first language, so please excuse my sometimes lacking knowledge of the deeper meaning of words. And it's Sinuhe, not Sinhue ;)

ACK! my ghost shrimp attacked my goldfish

Maybe they are not Ghost Shrimp, after all? Based on what I've been reading about shrimps, Ghost Shrimp should not attack fish. I recently bought a shrimp that I, too, thought was a Ghost Shrimp at first, but based on help from people at the forum, we determined it was actually from the...
