My Continuous Battle with Green Cyano

I've had some cyanobacteria in all of my tanks, and in one of them it got pretty bad. Surprisingly, I beat it with frequent gravel vacuums and keeping the lights off. No medicine needed. I'd do more frequent gravel vacuums than once a week for a while, at least like 3 times a week, and keep the...

Sick platy? or about to deliver?

Where were the worms coming from exactly? I'd imagine some intestinal worms could make a fish look bloated. Did you notice if she had a "pregnant spot", a dark spot in the middle of her body?

    Bullying!

Is it a coldwater tank? How big is the tank? Are all of the fish goldfishes? How big are they? Answers to these questions might help someone here helo you :).

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Oh no, I didn't mean to discourage anyone! Sorry about that. There is still a lot I enjoy about the hobby, and if you take it as a challenge, it'll keep your interest up for a long time ;).

    Arghhh, fin rot, etc.

Yeah, as I was browsing through a book, I started wondering if this is fungus, instead. The problem is that my LFS will be closed for the next 3 days for Christmas, so Saturday is the earliest I can get new medicine. If the situation gets worse, I'll probably try some salt meanwhile. If it stays...

    Arghhh, fin rot, etc.

I have a 33 gallon/ 128 liter tank with 5 Swordtails, 3 Platies (plus one fry), 4 Otos, 2 Zebra Danios, and live plants. I quaranteed all fish for 2 weeks before adding, and the water parameters have always been fine (ammonia, nitirites, and nitrates 0, pH a stable 8.0). A few weeks ago I...

ACK! my ghost shrimp attacked my goldfish

I think mine was also Indian Prawn. I still have one shrimp/prawn left in one tank. So far, he's much smaller in size, and his claws don't look that offending, but I'll keep an eye on him, and if he grows big/ gets aggressive, I'll have to get rid of him, too, or get him a separate tank. Ghost...

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Thanks, Brian :). Yes, Finnish is the language. Alli, good luck with fighting the algae bloom! For how long will you be gone, and do you have someone looking after your tanks during the trip? And who will "look after" our tanks when you're not here giving advice?

    dechlorinate before or after?

I use buckets, so I add my dechlorinator before. Also I prefer letting the water sit for a couple of hours, because I don't like those small bubbles sticking to everything if you put water fresh from the tap into the tank.

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Stable might be better :P. English is not my first language, so please excuse my sometimes lacking knowledge of the deeper meaning of words. And it's Sinuhe, not Sinhue ;)

ACK! my ghost shrimp attacked my goldfish

Maybe they are not Ghost Shrimp, after all? Based on what I've been reading about shrimps, Ghost Shrimp should not attack fish. I recently bought a shrimp that I, too, thought was a Ghost Shrimp at first, but based on help from people at the forum, we determined it was actually from the...

Need a quick answer please, fish being strange

It also seems to depend on the type of fish how likely they are to flash. My 2 Zebra Danios do it occasionally whichever tank they are in, but have never showed any other signs of disease, the water parameters are fine, and the other fish do it very rarely, or not at all. It has driven me crazy...

What are the odds on this?

I have 3 tanks and have never registered ammonia in them. Maybe something is wrong with the test, but the fish have not shown any sign of ammonia levels, either.

Zebra danio sticking to bottom of tank

Maybe my tanks are an exception, but I find everything doesn't always go by the book. Or then my test kit is screwed up. With cycling my 3 tanks with fish (2 Zebra Danios) I have at no point had noticeable levels of ammonia or nitrites, and even after 2-3 months still no nitrates. Especially my...

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

Well, maybe perfect is not the right word, but I'd like to, at least for a moment, be satisfied with the tank . Having everything in balance and looking nicely put together.

    Never been more worried...

For how long will you be gone? If only for a few days, you can just leave the lights off, just like ferret says. I have live plants in all my tanks, and recently had to keep the lights off for several days (apart from turning them on shortly every day to check on things) to beat cyanobacteria...

Is your tank ever perfect? *sigh*

With 3 tanks, I'm quaranteed to have some kind of a problem with at least one of them at a time, and sometimes all of them. I restarted in the hobby in late September. I seem to be going through the same stuff with each tank one or more at a time: first you get the diatoms, then the green algae...

Water Changes: How often and how much?

I normally change 25-30% weekly, with a gravel vac all over. Lately I've been having various problems (cyanobacteria, planaria, etc, yuck) in my tanks, which means I've been doing 2-3 water changes a week.

Zebra danio sticking to bottom of tank

How big is the tank? Have you got live plants? For any moderately sized tank, I don't think 2 Zebra Danios would cause an ammonia spike after a couple of days in the tank, at least they never did for me. In any case, it's important to test your water values, just like said before :).

Omg, I can't believe what just happened!

Holy cow! :o The stripes showing through, kind of grotesque . Hmm, that's a nice idea, Ally, but I can't think of a place anywhere near that manufactures stuff like that. At least one that I'd know of. And it's not just the tank, but all the other needed stuff that adds to the price... I...

Omg, I can't believe what just happened!

Yeah, tell me about it, I would have been devastated to find the Oto dead afterwards, not knowing what happened, and not knowing it was the shrimp. You can't find a fully equipped 10 gallon for the equivalent of $40 in Finland, unless you go for a used kit :(. I've been looking for used 10...
