    More fish dying...

Peas?? Really?? Just normal peas? Do they eat them off the bottom? And shrimp - is that just normal store-bought shrimp? It seems a bit cannibalistic to be feeding them shrimp, I guess not though... Fishy thanks for that link, there's some great sites there. Sometimes too much information is a...

Why do you say that Tom? I bought mine in the LFS...

    More fish dying...

Thanks for the tip of the thermometer, I'll go and have a look in the lfs later today. Nothing I can really put my fingers on, they're definitely not as active as they were last week, they're moving just a bit slower and a bit sluggishly. I think their colour may not be as bright but I don't...

    More fish dying...

No Enigma you're right it is one of those sticky-on jobs, and it's a glass tank. I didn't realise they were so inaccurate - I'll go and get another thermometer for inside the water after work and see what the temp looks like. How do you guys normally measure the temp in the new water for PWCs...

    More fish dying...

Do you think thats what's causing the deaths then? I don't even know how to get it down, turning the knob on the heater doesn't seem to make any difference at all. I guess I'll contact the LFS and maybe get it replaced if its not working. The tank is a Juwel 70, does anyone else use them and...

What do u think is the best freshwater test kit?

I was using InterPet but was advised on this forum to get the AP Master Test Kit, and it's much better, easier to do, and more accurate, so go with AP. Don't think there's any electronic ones (someone jump in if I'm wrong) but wouldn't it be great if there was??

    More fish dying...

Thanks Brian, glad to know that I'm hopefully not doing anything wrong - thanks to everyone on this forum! Yeah a lot of people are saying that the neons are pretty fragile lately, so I'm kinda expecting these guys to die and if that happens then I'll just cycle the tank properly with some...

    More fish dying...

One day, I tested the water on Friday evening with the Interpet kit and then on Saturday evening with the AP kit. But I have never gotten any ammonia or nitrite result with either of them, and I think the pH test with the Interpet just must have been wrong. I only did a PWC, about 30%, and I...

    More fish dying...

Hi everyone, I've had a few threads running over the last week or two regarding my new 15 gal tank and the 7 neon tetras I got to start it off, so I'll summarize briefly. One of the fish died after a couple of days, I found this forum and learned about the nitrogen cycle (an ammonia spike was...

    Stress Zyme?

Okay, that's good enough for me. I have been feeding the fish smaller amounts the last day or 2 after learning about it on this forum, so the leftover food is from before that. I'll take that out this evening. Its funny though they seem to have trouble eating flakes off the surface of the water...

    Stress Zyme?

Yep. Okay thanks so much I finally understand whats going on in the tank, I really appreciate the advice. One more quick question - there is some food debris at the bottom of the tank (just a small bit), which has been there for a couple of days. I was going to clean it but then had second...

    Stress Zyme?

Okay I totally understand now. What you've explained is pretty much what I was thinking, but just wasn't sure. I've learned a lot over the last few days and it's a lot of information to process! You've explained it perfectly, thanks loads. Yes I will do what you have advised, I'll increase the...

    I don't understand...

I'm actually a "she" everyone :D Yeah it didn't occur to me either that all the sites people mention are US sites. I've found the website of a lfs actually just down the road from my work and they stock the AP kit, so I'll run down after work and get it. So I'll do another measurement this...

    Stress Zyme?

I haven' t been using the Stress Zyme at all, I only learned all about the cycle in the last couple of days, and a friend said that she used Stress Zyme and it has the bacteria and stuff already, so I thought I'd check here before buying it. So it has never been used in the water, the only...

    Stress Zyme?

Hi guys, Since posting this I have done a liquid test and all the parameters are normal - no ammonia or nitrite and a nitrate level of under 10mg/l. Someone else mentioned that this probably means that the cycle hasn't started yet, so would I not be okay if I keep monitoring the ammonia levels...

    I don't understand...

The test kit I bought is the Interpet Easy Test - it tests the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and "pH broad range" as it calls it. The little booklet says that pH ranges from 0 - 14, with a neutral level of 7... it says the optimum level for an aquarium is 6.5 to 8.5... is that correct? The kit is a...

    I don't understand...

I let my 15gal tank just run the filter for a few weeks before I populated it last week with 7 neon tetras. Yesterday one of the tetras died and a couple of the others were looking a bit bloated, and someone told me about cycling the tank as it was probably an ammonia spike causing the trouble...

    Common Newbie Pitfalls

Uummm as a newbie reading this thread, this is all fantastic help, and yes its a great idea to have a one-stop-shop for us novices to go and get the info we need. One thing I might point out though, some of you are throwing out terms and phrases without explaining them, you just might want to...

    Stress Zyme?

I've just learned about cycling the tank, after populating it with 7 neon tetras and losing one (fingers crossed the others are okay when I get home from work!), so I have to get that sorted immediately. I heard that Stress Zyme is good for getting the cycle going in the aquarium, but I thought...

    Cleaning gravel?

Eric, your daughter has great taste in places to visit! Thanks again guys. I'm heading straight to the lfs after work so hopefully will find something that'll do the trick :D And Brant, thanks for the reading tip, I do have an aquarium book at home (can't remember name) but will definitely...

    Cleaning gravel?

Thanks for the responses guys. That's great, I didn't realise you can just vacuum it up. There isn't a huge amount of food down there, but I am having ammonia problems so don't want to add to it. Eric, thanks for the links but I'd rather not wait to have something delivered, I assume I can buy a...

    Cleaning gravel?

This may seem like a stupid question, but I'm obviously new to all this, and was just wondering what is the best way to clean gravel? I feed my fish flake food and a lot of it sinks down to the bottom and they don't eat it once it lands on the gravel. I'm only now finding out about cycling the...

One dead one bloated - help!

Thanks all for the advice. That's terrible I can't believe the lfs didn't tell me about this. I was just told to start up the filter and leave it running for a few weeks and that would be enough. Oh and adding Stress Coat to remove the chlorine from the water. I'll get a test kit on my way...

One dead one bloated - help!

Hi, I recently set up my very first aquarium. I got the water tested after letting the filter run for a few weeks and the guy in the fish shop told me the water was fine. I bought 7 neon tetras last Sunday to start the tank off. Its not Thursday evening and I just came home to find one fish...
