    Side Lighting

Great question. I've wondered about this as well, since my Eclipse hoods make it a bit difficult to add additional lights to the top. One thing that occurs to me, is that side lighting a tank might be a problem with blinding fish. I mean, most fish swim horizontally and would be swimming...

    I need help....seriously!!

I keep seeing tanks for sale and must stop myself from buying them. Right now, I'm limiting myself to my 25-gal and 6-gal - but I do have an empty 10-gal and 6-gal sitting around. I just keep thinking about how more tanks will be a pain-in-the-a** when I (1) move and (2) go away on trips...

    Tank mates?

If you can fit at least 3 cory cats in your tank, then that would be good. They are bottom-dwellers, so they would do well with your other fish. :)

    need 1-2 more fish- suggestions?

I agree. A school of rummynoses would look great! :)

loads of help and equipment info needed

Hi Price, a couple things that I didn't see mentioned in this thread (or in the articles Menagerie provided links to): BioSpira. This is a product that will dramatically speed up your cycle. Many people have reported success with this product, as it is different than other products (ie, Cycle...

    neon tetra disease, 13 dead

Hi couplescaddy, did you lose any of your cardinal tetras? I'm asking because neon tetra disease does not affect cardinals, so if you lost cardinals then it might've been something else (non-NTD). Or it could've been NTD and something else. :)

    Help please A few questions

Yep, as JRagg and RoK mentioned - the silver dollar will likely nibble on the plants (although I don't think they nibble on java ferns, something about java ferns tasting very bitter). Anyway, do you know what type of plants you are getting? Depending on your lighting, some plants may not...

    Bio Spira Updates

I agree with R&L. The chain stores usually aren't too helpful, since the employees aren't supposed to be giving anything away - and many aren't that up-to-speed about cycling and wouldn't understand why you wanted some old filter stuff or gravel. The independent stores should be better. It...

    My Newb Tank, Help wanted!

If you plan on ever getting shrimp for that tank, then avoid any copper products - as they can poison shrimp long after the copper is removed from the water column. I think the copper precipitates and then leeches out in the future, or something like that. I've also read that some tanks have...

When can I add more fish?

Assuming that your tank doesn't start showing ammonia or nitrites, then I'd wait at least a week - but probably no need to wait more than 2 weeks. So, somewhere between 1-2 weeks. If you had a 10-gal, then that would be different...but in a 29-gal, 1-2 weeks should be fine. Good luck! :)

    Condensation in a submersible heater

I would probably toss it, as it sounds like water is getting inside. Or, if you can find the crack or hole that is allowing water inside and cover it, then it might be okay to keep...but better safe than sorry. :)

    Bronze Corydoras missing barbels...

From what I've read, cories lose barbels due to poor water quality, high nitrates, and/or anoxic conditions in substrates...also, if the gravel is too rough. Once the gravel/water conditions are improved, then the barbels should eventually grow back. Good luck!

    Help please A few questions

The only reason I can think of to explain why there are less bubbles with the 10-gal is water level. The higher the water level is (the closer the water's surface is to the output of the HOB filter), then the fewer bubbles there will be as the water returns to the tank from the filter. Oxygen...

    Need help choosing a heater for a 10gal tank/..........

Hi Edgar, that heater that you mentioned is not submersible. That heater attaches to the edge of the tank and cannot be submersed underwater. The submersible heaters are better. They usually don't have the clamp thing at the top of the heater, but have suction cups instead to attach them to...

    He's alive!!!!!

I had a ghost shrimp that jumped towards me as I was working on the tank and that freaked me out. I was worried that I had smashed the glass as I jerked my arm back and my elbow hit the edge of the tank.

'lighting' for a 10 gal aquarium

Hi Edgar, are you trying to find lighting the entire tank or just for accent lighting? Does the tank have live plants or plastic/silk plants? :)

    Oxygen Question

The Eclipse System 6 usually comes with 8 or 9 watts of T-5 lighting. Some plants will grow okay in there. Mine are doing pretty well, especially my ambulia. :) The bio-wheel will still work as designed if it spins very slowly, but it shouldn't never move. If that's the case, then you...

Many problems with tank, please read

If it's not NTD, then it might be bacterial or parasitic. From some of the sites, it sounds like cases of "false NTD" are usually bacterial infections - so I suppose you could use the Maracyn and Maracyn Two antibiotics. They can be used at the same time. Problem with...

    Dorm room tank...

I agree. I have an extra Eclipse 6-gal in the closet that I'm tempted to convert into a DP tank (with 2 DP's), but am trying to fight the MTS urges. ;) Anyway, the most important thing about keeping multiple DP's would be to have lots of plants/decor that create visual barriers - which helps...

    Help please A few questions

Just checking, but did you add a heater to the 55-gal when it changed from coldwater koi to tropicals? It should be at least a 200-watt heater and placed in an area where the heated water will be circulated throughout the tank, so that there aren't 'cold' and 'warm' areas in the tank...

    odd ball things

It should be okay as long as the soap is rinsed off well. Glass usually isn't porous enough to absorb soap, so there shouldn't be too much soap residue after a good rinsing/soaking. :)

pet store not as good as I imgained

Hey Tropicfishman - that's too bad about the new store. Did it seem that they were completely done with that area, or maybe they're still in the process of getting their staff up-to-speed and their merchandise set-up. Hopefully, it will get better over time. Maybe corporate wanted to 'test...

    hassled over fish?

Wouldn't really call it "hassled", but some people I know think it's a waste of my money to buy test kits/medications, a waste of time to test the water, and a waste of time to do water changes if the water doesn't 'look' dirty. These are the old-schoolers that keep 2 goldfish in a 10-gal or do...

Many problems with tank, please read

Wow, the first time I've read about Neon Tetra Disease. Heard of it, but never read about it. Sounds like what your fish have, and it sounds like it's best to separate the sick ones from the rest of the tank. Probably best to move both of the fish you described - the lumpy one and the erratic...

Russian moss balls and algea eaters

I'm assuming you're referring to 'marimo balls' (Cladophora aegagropila). Even though it is an "algae", the algae eaters shouldn't bother the balls. Also, it sounds like you might have a Chinese Algae Eater - in which case, it will likely stop eating any kind of algae when it matures. As they...
