Need help on buying a canister filter

Hey guys. I have a no-name canister filter that's about 160GPH, my tank is somewhat heavily stocked and has 55 gallons. My previous no-name canister (same as current one) has had some problems, I've found a replacement but I'm really not confident in this canister filter type anymore. The...

    water change philosophy

50% change once a week. I've always filled my tank with water straight from the tap, and added dechlorinator mid-way through; my fish were never bothered with it. The results of this may vary, though, as not everyone has the same tap water. Cheers!

adding beta to a community aquarium?

As everyone else said, tiger barbs are very nippy and a Betta is possibly one of the worst neighbors for them. Since the Texas is rehomed, the situation is better but still not ideal. Perhaps get a tiny 4gal for a Betta separately if you're into that?

    Cloudy water help please

Nothing to worry about. Give it time, do regular maintenance, and it should go away on it's own. Is this a new tank? Or have you had it for a long while? Cheers

Moving long distance what should I do.

You can pack up your fish comfortably for the trip... 1000 miles is a lot but many fish are imported from much bigger distances than that. Maybe that's the best choice. Perhaps look into giving away the fish separately from the tank - this would ensure that they don't get thrown out by the new...

recommendations for filter cause mine is naff

What's the size of your aquarium? Also, what's your budget? There's a billion fish tank filters out there, many of them are good... Have a look here, hopefully it helps https://fishtankclub.com/best-fish-tank-filter/ I own a crappy knock-off brand canister filter and it's doing the job...

Sorry to hear about the little guy... Always heartbreaking when a fish dies :(

    Did I overstock?

Thank you very much SherLar. I'll commit to constant water changes. Definitely considering an extra filter. As a temporary solution, I think I'll rehome a tiny portion of the more sturdy fish in an empty 10 gal just to take some bioload off of my tank. Thanks.

    Did I overstock?

I've been looking at stocking threads and articles for a while and I gathered absolutely nothing from them... So many different opinions and tips, I'm not sure what to believe. I was hoping someone here could help. After a recent trip to my LFS I ended up caving in to the salesman and came home...

Want to start a marine aquarium, but not sure if I can afford it...

Unfortunately we don't have any of those where I'm from :( But I'll look around and try to find some deals. Very little fishkeeping gear over here, so everything is a ripoff... Perhaps I'll look into ordering online Thanks

    Algae problems

It's been at least 3 months since I actually filled the tank - I said I "completed" it two weeks ago, though I should've been clearer... What I meant is I've stopped adding new plants or messing with the hardscape, and stopped stocking for the time being. Took some water to my LFS and they've...

    Algae problems

2x24W T5 bulbs. It's done cycling, and I'm (finally) happy with the plants and the hardscape. At the moment, I have 3 angelfish, 9 neon tetras and 15-ish harlequin rasboras. I've taken out everything while temporarily housing the fish elsewhere. Scrubbed the driftwood, stones, everything...

Want to start a marine aquarium, but not sure if I can afford it...

I can mix the water with a canister filter? Nice! Will definitely look into it. Sounds a lot cheaper than I imagined. Thank you!

Want to start a marine aquarium, but not sure if I can afford it...

Interesting! I'll look into it. I've expected needing a billion gizmos just to sustain a marine tank. Thanks.

Want to start a marine aquarium, but not sure if I can afford it...

Hi guys. I've just recently gotten into fishkeeping. I've recently finished a freshwater tank, and I'd really like to start working on a saltwater aquarium as a gift for my significant other. My question is, how much money should I expect to bust on a marine setup? I don't want anything insane...

    Stocking a 10 gallon tank

From what I know, a 10 gallon severely limits you on what you can keep. Guppies would be a bad choice I think, because a Betta male can mistake a guppy for another Betta. A couple of Neon Tetras, but they can get nippy and harass your Betta fish. I've had problems with mine. Observe them and...

    Algae problems

Hi guys. I'm new to these forums and very new to fishkeeping. Just two weeks ago I completed my very first aquarium. It's 55 gallons, I use 2x24 T5 bulbs, which I keep on 8 hours a day and not more. I'm having some huge algae problems. I've been seeing these extremely nasty algae grow more and...
