    dwarf gouramis

Maybe it's different in the UK but i had no problems getting females from my usual lfs, and i think it's a shame that they have a reputation for being drab or dull looking as they're really quite pretty, even if they aren't as striking as the males. ...at least I think these two are females!

Do you still eat fish or shrimp, lol

I've thought the same thing sometimes, but then we eat some small mammals i.e. pigs and sheep and keep other small mammals as pets i.e. cats and dogs. Also lots of people eat rabbit and lots of people keep rabbits as pets. Keeping animals or fish as pets is stranger than eating them in some...

    I finally got my gouramis!

Flippin heck, these guys don't half poo! They must be pooing more than they're eating, they're like little poo machines!

    I finally got my gouramis!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I'm so chuffed I've been after a dwarf gourami for so long now and the lfs had stopped ordering them because in the hot weather they weren't surviving the journey to the shop. But this morning it occurred to me that it's been a bit cooler recently so I...

How do you tame a gourami?

I agree. Male gouramis are notoriously randy little buggers. Although we humans might not approve one male gourami is often too much for only one female.

    funny fish names

most of my fish don't have names as I can't really tell them apart but one of the harlequins is much smaller than the rest so he's called PeeWee and one of the pristellas is much bigger than the others so she's called Bertha (named after a children's TV character here in the UK who's a big...

    middle/upper swimmers

I have 6 harlequin rasboras and I reckon you'd love them. If you google them they look pretty dull in most of the pictures you get back but under lights they have this almost ethereal orangey glow which is just gorgeous. They are really active schooling fish and generally very joyful little...

    algae!

I think I have the same type of algae - greeny brown and wipes away quite easily. I have a green scrubby thing like the one I clean my kitchen pots and pans with and I just wipe it off with that (I don't clean the pots and pans with the same one  ) once a week when I change the water. I...

    Can't decide...

I've got a 28 gallon tank which currently houses 5 pristella tetras, 6 harlequin rasboras and one whiptail catfish. The tank has been set up around 4 months and everyone seems happy so far. I'm hoping to get a few dwarf gouramis but my lfs have had some supplier problems so no joy on that...

    Gourami advice

I'm hoping to get dwarf gouramis too and the advice I've seen in various places is that you should get 2 females for each male because they can be randy little blighters! Also the males are territorial so if you were to get more than one male you'd have to make sure there's enough room for each...

    worms?

thanks...i just did a water change and fed them! having said that they munched their flakes pretty quickly so I was thinking about giving them a bit more so i'll try them on some peas. thank you I have noticed now some of the strings on the floor, there are quite a few in the area i didn't...

Have I Screwed Up Horribly Already?

I'd second the comments about harlequin rasboras and pristella tetras. They're very active, especially the harlequins, and should only grow to about 2 inches. I've get a plant food called leaf zone. You just need to add it once a week which I do when I do a water change. Nice and easy.

    cute

my dog eats everything...including rubber gloves!

    worms?

Most of my harlequin rasboras have these strings coming out of their bums, I'm guessing probably worms but as the lfs is shut now any of you advise? I've attached a picture but I'm afraid I couldn't get a decent one as the harlequins never stay still!! It just looks like a fine brown...

    Near disaster!

My brother inherited a tank from a friend of his. They'd bagged up all the fish and packed away all the ornaments and stuff, transported it all to his flat and it wasn't until they were unpacking it all that they found a catfish hanging on to a rock. He survived miraculously. (the fish...

    Question about addition of fish..........

My harlequins and tetras school together too. I guess they're just really open minded  Well, they sort of do two schools alongside each other iyswim. The tetras were so excited when the harlequins first arrived it was great to watch! :D But I do think that although they like each...

    best acclimatization method?

I'm a bag water adder too. But my lfs are really good, all my fish and plants have come from the same place and I know that they won't sell fish that they're not 100% sure (or at least as sure as you can be) are happy and healthy so there should never be anything in their water that I would...

    physical contact?

I was vac-ing my tank yesterday when one of my harlequins started pecking at my hand. I thought "what's his problem, is he pissed off with me for some reason?" when one of the others started doing it too. Then I realised they were pecking at a couple of small freckles on my hand, must have...

    need help, please, anyone!!!

I can't believe they put the fish in the bin, that's appalling and makes me so mad  What shop is that?

    fishles cycle not possible?

I'm in the UK too. I haven't tried a fishless cycle before but just a thought - have you tried your local garden centres for ammonia? A lot of garden centres have tropical fish and pond sections in them (my lfs is in a garden centre) and they might be a bit less clueless than you're average...

    How to naturally lower pH?

OK thank you I'll do that. Can I pick up driftwood from the lfs or just grab it off the beach (sounds like a good excuse to book a surfing trip!)

    How to naturally lower pH?

My pH level is pretty high - at 8. The fish I have at the moment seem really happy and I don't really want to start putting too many chemical treatments in the water and making the conditions fluctuate but I was wondering if there's a natural way to bring the pH down a little - any particular...

    Can I add rams ?

I hope you don't think I'm hijacking your thread Joannde but I was thinking about getting rams at some point too (great minds think alike eh?!). I've seen suggestions that you should get 3 or more, wait for a breeding pair to emerge and then take the extra ones back to the lfs. I was wondering...
