Good Mechanical Canister Filter for 45g

I'm looking for a good, not overly expensive, canister filter to do mechanical filtering only on a 45gallon planted tank. It's fairly heavily planted, so I don't need carbon or bio filtering. I'm more interested in large particle and water polishing. I plan on running the output through a C02...

    What nutrient am I missing??

I bought some plants last week from AquariumPlants.com (that was an experience all in itself). It doesn't look like several of them aren't doing well. They seemed fine when I got them, but seem to be going downhill. Any ideas based on the pictures what's missing?? I'm using...

    Fert Recommendation and other questions.

Can anyone recommend what tests I should run on my 45 gallon 'tall' (24" high) medium light medium planted tank? I have the 6 in 1 test strips that show my Ammonia, Nitrate, and Chlorine at zero, Total Hardness (GH) is around 150 (well water), Alkalinity is 180, and PH is about 7.0. What else...

    Fert Recommendation?

I have a 45gallon tank with 1.75wpg T5HO lighting (both 6700k). I'm going to go with mainly low - low/med light plants such as water sprite, anacharis, and maybe a sword or two. Any recommendations on a good online place to buy plants? I'm on well water where I live, so I assume I'll get plenty...

    My 45gallon plan. Sound good??

I have a 45 gallon 'high' tank that's 24" tall, 36" wide, and 12" deep (horizontally). This is my plan; 39w x2 T5HO lights. 78W total, two 36" bulbs. 45lbs Flourite bedding, covers the bottom about 3 1/2" deep 5lb C02 bottle with a Spio III glass/ceramic disc diffuser HOB 40-60 gallon filter...

Lighting recommendation for 47 Gallon Tall tank

I just picked up a used 47 gallon 'tall' tank that I'm trying to figure out lighting on. It's 36" wide, 12" deep, and 24" tall. I plan on setting this up as a community fish planted tank and using PC lighting. Given the difference in lumen output between NO and PC lighting, how many watts...

    Dosing Recommendations needed

I have a 125 gallon medium planted tank with 1.5wpg, C02 injected through a reactor. I have a bag of CSM+B (or what ever it is) from GregWatson.com. How much and how often should I dose the dry ferts? I figure if I put it in the sump (wet/dry filter for 150gallon tank) it won't 'shock' the tank...

    Best Glass Cleaner?

What's the best thing to clean the outside glass with that won't harm the tank? I've heard Windex and others will pollute the tank with Ammonia, and that makes sense. What's best to use? Would Vinegar/Water (for hard water stains) hurt anything? Any suggestions?

It's time for a Rousing Round of Guess That Plant!!

I have a plant I bought from a LFS that's now 600 miles away. It was heavily damaged in the move, so I'd like to replace it. Problem is, I have no idea what it is. Thus the game. Pictures would make this too easy, so you'll have to make due with my sadly inadequate description... Ok, picture a...

Well water and the planted tank?

I recently moved from SoCal with local tap water that was actually doing quite well in my tank (properly treated of course) to NorCal. We are on Well Water here (40 acres 15 min from town). I know the water is fairly hard, but what effect will it have on my tank? Are the minerals etc good for...

    Carbon and the planted tank?

I have a planted tank that I've taken the carbon out of (about 3 weeks ago). It's gradually gotten slightly cloudy with a yellowish tinge to it. Normally carbon would clear this right up. Should I put it back in? Will carbon remove necessary nutrients from the water? If so, how do I get the...

    Overdosed??

I added 2 teaspoons of Grant's Stump Remover (KN03) to my 125 gallon tank last night. I tested Nitrate and Phospate today. Nitrate is at either 80 or 160 PPM, can't tell on the colors. Yes, I know this is way high. I have no idea why it went from 0 to that high with a small dose. Will 100ish...

    What caused this plant damage?

I have some, uh, Amazon Swords (I think, Anubis something or other) that I put in my tank on Sunday. They were all very healthy upon entry into the tank. Today is Wednesday, and this is what I'm seeing. I think this one is just damage and not nutrient related, but I'm not sure. Also, in...

    Black Brush Algae? No problem!

I originally posted in this group because of a severe infestation of Black Beard Algae (BBA). I was a bit overwhelmed with all the advice on how to balance nutrients, PH, K, N03, etc. I had been doing water changes with strictly R/O water and doing no fertilizing or nutrient replenishment...

    Thank you guys!

I posted here for the first time last week with questions about my planted tank and algae gone amok. I learned more from the answers I received to my numerous questions, as well as the stickies, than I had in the year and a half of having the planted tank. Thank you for the very quick and very...

To plant or not to plant

I always assumed that a planted tank would be much less maintenance than a non-planted tank because of the plants doing most of the filtering. I had a 115 gallon show tank with crushed coral gravel two Fluval 303's filtering it. I would routinely go 2-3 months between filter cleanings/water...

    Algae and Anarchy

I'm fairly new to planted tanks, so I'm a bit behind the learning curve. This is what I have. 125 gallon tank 400w CF lights similar to http://www.vividaquariums.com/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=04-2159 except that mine are two bulbs each in two fixtures attached to the inside of the wooden...
