    Goldfish problem

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to pick up a couple of new test kits today (in case the ones I have are no longer working properly) and I'll definitely be keeping a close check on the bucket. The filter should have some bacteria built up, but it might not be enough to handle a goldie. It was...

    Goldfish problem

Oh, and I'm going to do a fairly large water change on the main tank and add melafix and pimafix even though the other fish aren't showing any symptoms. Better safe than sorry. I guess I'll have to try and get out soon and pick up some new test kits.

    Goldfish problem

Ok, I've moved him into a 5 gallon bucket complete with HOB filter. I've added 2 tbs of salt, but I don't know how much more I need to add to bring it up to .3%? I've also added melafix and pimafix since I had them on hand and figured it couldn't hurt. Once I figure out the amount, I'll bring...

    Aquarium overhangs stand

I have a 25 gal that I couldn't find a stand to fit when I bought it, so I got a piece of plywood and had it cut to fit the tank and put that on the closest stand I could find. It's been there now for about 3 years with no problems. Mine hangs out about an inch on both sides but fits the stand...

    Goldfish problem

Hey Everyone, I have an issue with one of my goldfish that I hope someone can give me some insight on. For some time now, Hobbes (a fantail) has been hanging around the bottom and/or hiding out in a plant a lot and exhibiting very little activity. However, he still goes full steam at feeding...

    What the flip?

LOL Corn on the cob was exactly what came to mind for me as well! Perhaps the snails do explain it. I knew it couldn't be the nerites since I've watched them lay eggs one at a time on the glass before, plus this was much too big to have come from them. But, I used to have 2 apple snails in this...

    What the flip?

Ok, so this shows up in my tank out of nowhere. It appears to be some sort of egg sac, but this tank only houses goldfish, asian filter shrimp and nerite snails. So I'm puzzled? What do you think....

    Magically Appearing Snails

I'm no expert, but certainly they aren't like pond snails. I saw two of those in my tank just after adding the plants. Two to three weeks later, I couldn't count them anymore...

    Magically Appearing Snails

Sounds like Malaysian trumpets. I had a couple of ramshorns and common pond snails hitch a ride on my plants. The pond snails have very quickly taken over. Oh well...

Sick Dwarf Gouramie - No QT

I could put him in a bucket (about 4 gallons) but it would be unheated. I could keep my room temp at around 21-22 C. But wouldn't that be too cold for him?

Will bamboo shrimp eat their shell?

LOL Yeah, I likely would have thought the same thing had I not already read about the moulting on here. So I was ready for it! Still looked pretty freaky. I think my goldfish may have had a few nibbles on it. They'll eat just about anything :)

Sick Dwarf Gouramie - No QT

I have a sick dwarf gouramie. He was likely sick when I bought him a little less than 2 weeks ago. I went through great lengths to pick out the healthiest fish in the tank. Unfortunately, the guy netting him lost him and though I tried my best to follow him, I clearly failed. When I got home, I...

Will bamboo shrimp eat their shell?

So, I've heard that when a shrimp moults, you should leave the moult in the tank and they will eat it, which is apparently a good supplement to thier diet. But, I'm wondering if this applies to bamboo/wood shrimp. Being that they are normally filter feeders, I'm not sure if they are even capable...

    Neon Tetra "Trap"

I did actually think of that because they are pretty tiny, but I checked my filter when he disappeared and found no trace of them. I don't think the little plastic impeller would be powerful enough to make mush of them, would it???

    Neon Tetra "Trap"

Ok so, one of my five neons has completely disappeared. There is no sign of it anywhere. I did a PWC tonight and carefully checked through all the plants and even lifted the drifwood in case there might be a body trapped under it. I don't see any explanation for this unless the dwarf gouramie...

    Those blue stick on backgrounds.

Yeah, I did the veggie oil thing as well, after a tip from someone on here. It was indeed very simple, not messy at all, and I loved the result.

    Those blue stick on backgrounds.

Probably veggie oil repackaged and sold at a huge markup  Yeah, you got me, I'm a skeptic

    Neon Tetra "Trap"

I have 5 little neons in with a dwarf gouramie. I've only had them for a few days. The neons are certainly small enough for the gouramie to eat. Are they known to do this?

    Up and running....

Yeah, I suppose they might be at that. We'll just have to wait and see I guess... :) By the way, what is that creature in your avatar?

    Up and running....

Thanks guys. It is really exciting. You're right about the yellowish water blazeyreef. It's likely from the driftwood. I didn't bother to presoak it. I kinda like it though. Looks more natural. I'll try and get some better pics up in the next couple of days as time allows. The rocks are...

    Up and running....

Ok, so my first planted tank is up and running. I probably went a little overboard when I went to pick up the plants and there was a sale on :D On impulse my research went some what out the window and so I likely have a couple of plants that are not going to survive my lighting. The tank's a...

    Great $8.00 tool

They have those at the Pets Unlimited here. But they cost $22  Looks like a useful tool and I wouldn't mind having one, but I don't think it's worth $22. $8-$10 sounds about right. Sigh :(

    Airstone in planted aquarium?

Yeah the bubble walls are cool. I have one in my goldie tank. I used to have the wal-mart stick one, but then I found this cool bendable one :D Also from wal-mart if I recall correctly.

    Feeding Bamboo Shrimp?

I finally got a response from Kent Regarding the use of Micro-Vert in freshwater aquariums. This is what they said: "I suppose it could. The only issue is that it is so heavy in organics that it could make mess of the tank you are feeding it to in fresh water. I would use it in moderation...
