    Compact Fluorescent Light...

thanks for the advice however, i finally called the place i bought my light & was told that the plug can be pried off with the flat tip of a screwdriver or butter knife but you must give gentle force and work from side to side...don't just pry from the center of the plug. therefore, following...

    Compact Fluorescent Light...

I have a CORALIFE Compact Fluorescent Light & need to change the bulb. I attempted to take the old bulb out but the black plug end doesn't seem to want to pull off. I was going to try to pry it off with the flat end of a screwdriver or butter knife but don't want to risk breaking it... before i...

    ICH or Something else....?

thanks for the reply. after doing some research, i'm thinking it could either be "whitespot" or some sort of fungus. since only one fish seems to be effected, i cleaned my tank and moved the effected fish into quarantine. as suggested on a website, i'm treating the fish with salt and am closely...

    ICH or Something else....?

one of my zebra danios has a white patch (abt 1/4 cm. x 1/4 cm.) on his back just behind his head. i've never dealt with ich but am thinking ich is more like tiny white spots in several places as opposed to just one fairly good sized patch. any ideas what i might be dealing with & suggested...

    Eco Complete and Cloudy Water

I have eco-complete in my planted tank and i would think you'd be much better off spending the extra $10 to get a new 20 lb bag. Eco-Complete is "No rinsing - packed in Liquid Amazon buffered "Black Water" solution for immediate organic water conditioning. Contains all mineral nutrients needed...

    Online Plant Stores

i've had good experience with www.aquariumplant.com the prices, imho, aere great and the shipping costs are quite reasonable. also, they are quite willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy you. however, i would call in my order and inquire abt the health and availabilty of the plants first. if...

    diatom algae

Allivymar, yes, i thought it unusual myself as i know diatoms are supposed to thrive in low light but i swear that was my experience. now that i have a planted tank, i have a 65w pc strip light on a 20 gal high and still have the problem. i think our water must be high in silcates or something...

    diatom algae

I have had this problem too and it never did go away. However, before swithching to a planted tank, I found that by limiting my lighting to 6 hrs a day and being careful not to overfeed that I was able to keep it very manageable. Also you can use a special filter medium to eliminate the...

    Soil substrate?

I was contemplating doing this myself at one point after having read the book, Ecology of the Planted Aquarium by Diana Walstad. From what i understand, you should let the soil soak to become water logged and then add it to your tank. Then put down the layer of rock and slowly pour your water...

    Substrate Varieties

well, Flourite is basically a porous clay substrate rich in iron, so it eliminates the need for laterite supplementation in planted tanks. As far as i know, the only difference between flourite and flourite red is color, although i could be wrong. Eco-Complete is a substrate that's packed in...

    hair algea on plants

in addition to Gunnie's advice, if possible, put in several very fast growing plants. they will use up the extra nutrients in the water column and the algae will have less chance of development in the first place. to help you find some suitable fast growing plants, here's a good site...

thanks, sweetsuvvyb. no, i'm not 100% certain it's diatomic ... that's why i am trying to find a high end test kit. as for my lighting, i have a 20 gal high with 65w (6,700K)pc lighting and i have my lights on for 10 hrs. each day. this tank has been up for approximately 2 months now. hmm, maybe...

    Diatoms?

I have been having a problem with this unsightly brown stuff growing in my tank(s) for as long as long as i've had it/them. for the most part, i found that by limiting the light and scraping it off whenever i see it i was able to control the growth. however, now that i have live plants, i really...

A question about treating tap water

the only thing i would add is that you be sure your dechlorintor not only eliminates chlorine but chloramine as well. i believe most dechlorinators do get rid of both i did buy an off brand once and unknowingly used it and lost a couple dwarf frogs :( . :D
