Best lighting for 5 gal planted tank?

Is this the same light? I found it on Big Al's site for less. Current USA Satellite 12" 18 Watt Power Compact Fixture-Single Strip W/Lunar Light at Big Al's Online

Best lighting for 5 gal planted tank?

I'm finally ready to upgrade the lighting on my 5.5 gallon tank. I'm tired of ugly brown diatoms. I'm still using same All Glass light strip I've had all along but with a 6500K fluorescent tube. An, do you still recommend this light? Compact Fluorescent Aquarium Lighting: Single Satellite...

Which one would be better lighting?

Ben, I've decided to buy a couple of clamp on lamps for my 5.5. gallon. How many lamps did you end up using with what watt bulbs and how did it work out? Thanks.

Trade: Mopani wood for plant (Reston, Va)

Hi there, I don't know what I was thinking. I bought a nice piece of Mopani driftwood, pictured below, but it will alter the PH of my one 5.5. gallon tank. Anybody near Reston interested in swapping for it with some java fern, Crypt willisi, or some other easy to grow plant? I have a 14W grow...

    Tiny bubbles on my heater

I used a straw to get rid of the bubbles and will slow the water back down again this weekend when I do a water change. I don't get how a slightly increased flow of water from an internal filter would cause bubbles. I was hoping someone here might have some idea what is causing them.

    Tiny bubbles on my heater

The past couple of weeks I've noticed tiny bubbles forming on my heater. I never had them before and the tank has been running for a year now. The only change I made recently, and it was about the same time the bubbles started, was to increase the flow of my Duetto 50 filter from the slowest...

Which one would be better lighting?

I also have a 5.5 gallon tank and asked about lighting awhile back. An t-iasg recommended this light. I wasn't prepared to buy it at the time but I just checked and it is still available at about the same price as the one you are looking at: Compact Fluorescent Aquarium Lighting: Single...

    Cave Help

I'm going to build a small fin-safe cave for my betta. After reading this thread I've decided not to use PVC. What do you think of cutting up a water bottle for the base? There would be no color to hide and you can pick any size you want. Would there be any issues with it sitting for a long time...

    New 5.5 gallon tank

Hey Chris, I like the rock formation in the back corner. Did you make it or buy it? If the latter, where and are there any rough edges on it? I've been trying to figure out something natural looking that my betta can swim through and hide under that his fins won't catch on.

Betta has fin rot, advice needed

Well, that is very reassuring, thank you. I thought I was being really blind to fin rot. I've looked at him closely and don't see any signs of disease other than fin length, no black edges, but the tail fins are so much shorter than before and so uneven! I do use a thermometer and will bump...

Betta has fin rot, advice needed

Hi, My betta fish is still active and eats well but his fins have receded a great deal. I thought it was normal aging but finally realized he probably has fin rot. I think I know what the stresser was. During the summer the water used to heat up to around 81 - 82 degrees in the late afternoon...

5.5 gal, where do I go from here?

Thanks. I tried out the black background using a garbage bag and liked it so I bought some aquarium paper. I also switched to black river rock. I haven't posted a picture yet because I can't get ahold of Crypt Willisii and everything looks a little dingy covered with either brown diatoms or bits...

    Rotting stems on Wisteria

Okay, thanks. I will double check the ties the next time I have to be in the tank.

    Rotting stems on Wisteria

I've had Wisteria in my tank for 3+ months now. At first I tried to plant it in the substrate (small gravel with laterite). It kept floating up and I had to keep replanting it and I noticed the stems were rotting. So I gave up on planting it and tied the stems to small pot shards to weigh it...

How do you tie fishing line to river rocks?

Well, that was fun! :-? The hairnet I bought was labelled "light." I never bought hairnet before so I was hoping "light" meant clear nylon. It turned out to be a sort of light brown thread that showed up a lot against the black river rock. I had some thread which perfectly matched the river...

How do you tie fishing line to river rocks?

I wasn't concerned with the metal in the wire affecting the water. I was concerned that it might injure my betta if he swam into it. Electrical/zip/cable ties are fine when hidden but I've used them before and didn't like it when I could see them. They stood out too much. I don't have this...

How do you tie fishing line to river rocks?

I presume you mean the plastic twist ties? When I set up the tank in January I tried using the paper ties and the wire ended up being exposed so I took them out. Plastic ties are a good idea but I already have a large reel of fishing line. I've got plenty of thread, all colors, but doesn't it...

How do you tie fishing line to river rocks?

Thanks for the great ideas. I thought about it last night and here's my plan: - Make tiny hairnet bags, put some aquarium gravel in them and tie them to the Wisteria with fishing line to weight them down. - Wrap hairnet around a couple of the larger river rocks, thread fishing line through...

How do you tie fishing line to river rocks?

I'm trying to create a more consistent look in my tank by tieing all of my plants to various sizes of river rock. First step is to tie fishing line to the river rock. It's making me crazy because I can't get the fishing line to hold on the smooth round rock! Is there a trick to it? The only...
