    Scooter Blenny Care

Upon the recommendation of the LFS owner, I bought a Scooter Blenny about a week ago. It appears to be doing well in my 55 FOWLR tank. The tank has been established and running for about 3 years now. Do anyone have any tips, etc., regarding the care of this fish. The LFS guy simply said that...

    New addition: Pencil Urchin

I just added a Pencil Urchin on Monday afternoon. Does anyone have any experience with these? This was locally caught specimen, and hopefully will adjust well to my tank. Two of my fish and all of my liverock and water is of local Maui origins. I'd like to add a pincushion urchin as well...

    Legs on Lights or not?

I just upgraded my lights to a Coralife Aqualight Double Strip Light (48"). The lights did not come with legs. At the moment the lights are resting on the tank. Should I buy the legs, do they make an appreciable difference in temperature? Please keep in mind I live in an area with a year...

    Chiller advice

I need a new chiller. My Via Aqua cc25 went haywire and dropped my tank down to 64 degrees. I had to diconnect it. I want to get a new chiller, one that works well. Any advice?

    Firefish Experience

Does anyone have experience with firefish? I would like one more small fish to my 55 FOWLR. Ideally, I would like a fish that hangs out "in" the live rock. Three of my four fish swim out in the open most of the time. The Potter's Angel is the only one that stays low in the tank. Would a Blenny...

    Over worker cleaner shrimp?

My Potter's Angel visits the cleaner shrimp at least 4-5 times a day, maybe more. The shrimp does not seem that eager to clean the Angel after the 2nd or 3rd time, while it is very eager to work on my Butterfly fish, and chases it down often. Does anyone else have an overworked cleaner...

    New Potter's Angel; any advice?

I just picked up a Potter's angelfish from my LFS. I watched it for about a week there, it was eating well, and looked healthy - so I bought it yesterday, passing over some very nice Flame Angels. It appears very happy and has been swimming around the live rock in my 55 FOWLR, nipping at...

    2 tanks; two fish questions

    1. Does anyone have any experience with a yellow watchman gobies? I was thinking of putting one in my newly set up 12 gal system after it finishes cycling. 2. I need an algea "grazer" for my 55 FOWLR. I currently have a cleaner shrimp, a small Raccoon Butterflyfish, and two percula clowns...

    12 gal inhabitant question

Over the Veterans Day holiday I was able to set up a 12 gallon tank that I had laying around. With several pepieces of live rock, a small piggyback filter, and a single 20 inch florescent bulb, the tank was up and running quickly. The tank is located on my covered lani (a porch). The...

    Question re: starfish

In my 55 gal FOWLR tank there appears to be an abundance of tiny starfish. They are greyish white in color, are no more than an inch from the tip of one leg to another, and look like brittle stars. They really start coming out when I feed my fish. What are these things? Are they good or bad...

    Sand Bed

What are the benfits of having a sand bed? How thick should the sand be? Can I just use sand taken off of a local beach? I live in Hawaii, and all of my live rock has been collected off of the beach after storms break up the reef and wash loose stuff in. What sort of sand should I look for...

    Cleaner shrimp compatibilty

I would really like to get a cleaner shrimp, but wanted to find out first if it would be at risk from my tank's other inhabitants. I have a 55 gal. tank with live rock (no corals for sale in HI; live rock is not for sale either, you have to find it on the beach after a storm). I have two small...

    Raccoon Butterflyfish Feeding

About a week ago I bought a small, about 2-3 inch long, Raccoon Butterflyfish from my LFS. It had been there for about a month, and was eating well according to the staff. In fact, it was eating flake food while I was there. Since I have placed the fish in my 55 gal reef tank, it has done very...

    Sunlight and planted tanks

My two, 20 gallon, planted tanks get a few hours of sunlight a day. I have a 15W bulb on each tank for viewing at night. The plants are growing well, and I recently had to trim back the Anachris. The Cabomba looks healthy. I really don't know the names of several the plants that are in the...

    Battling Bettas

I am new to freshwater, have some questions about Bettas: I bought a female betta for my male on Friday, and I had to separate them today. He was beating the crap out of her! I thought she was gone until I spotted her this morning. I put the male in a large jar (1 gallon). I'll keep him there...

    Broken Chiller - Dead Tang

My Via Aqua cc-25 chiller broke and my blue tang is dead. I came home from work yesterday and noticed that my blue tang was dead and stuck in the reef. I was bummed out, but waited until intermission of the hockey game (Kings v. Tampa Bay) to pull it out. The water was really warm. I checked...

    Compatible Tangs

I recently brought home a blue tang that took some time acclimating itself to my tank. After a little over two weeks, it is comfortable and spends a lot of time hanging around with my two percula clowns. I want to know if the blue tang is compatible with a yellow tang, or if they will battle...

Very shy new Blue Hippo Tang

: On Saturday afternoon/evening I added a healthy looking Blue Hippo Tang to my tank, and it has hidden in the back corner ever since. I feel bad for the fish, it kind of props itself on the live rock and the side of the tank and rests. A few times I have seen it poking around the reef, peeking...

Will a Peppermint Shrimp bother my polyps

If I get a Peppermint Shrimp for take care of my aptasia problem, would it bother my polyps? Are Peppermint shrimp known to bother soft corals?

What should I do about aptasias?

I have a common problem. Aptasia anenomes are spreading and thriving in my tank, especially since I began feeding my fish Mysis shrimp. In fact, before I added two percula clowns, I had only one visible aptasia. Are there any fish that eat these things? Can I just pull them out by hand? The...

Percula clown fish, anenomes, and Hawaii.

I want to know if Percula clown fish would live in any of the anenomes that are native to the Hawaiian islands. In Hawaii, it is illegal to import corals and live rock, although foreign fish can be sold in pet stores. So I can't just buy the appropriate anenomes or corals.
