    10g too small for cichlids?

Thankx all for the suggestions. I was aways for some days last week (detroit auto show, press reporter) but I was thinking of going with the smaller suggestions mentioned. I still dont know what are shell dwellers though , are they snails or smaller fish. Google search shows small fish with...

    10g too small for cichlids?

Hi, I have a spare 10g tank (originally I used it as a quarantine tank). I was thinking of making it a cichlid tank with some plants, one or two small but brightly colored cichlids. However the local Super Pets girl said cichlids are too aggressive to be in a 10 tank. Can someone please...

    Guppies fighting malaria

This is an interesting link. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3369341.stm Now we know what we can do with our leftover guppy fry.

    Do you need females?

Your guppies will not fight with each other just because they are also male. They will however fight each other over a female. 1 tank full of males = no problems. Add one female = big problem.

Ebay tanks and how many fish?

By the way, about your second question on the number of fish. If you do frequent water changes then you can put a lot, as these are usually small fishes. As you can see from my profile, I have around 26 organisms in the planted tank, no problems so far (fingers crossed). I change water...

Why does my AquaClear 200 keep on blocking up?

I found this a common problem with Aqua Clear filters. It happens because air somehow gets into the motor due to low level of water in tank (in correct submersion) or not enough water being in the media container when filter is running.

    Dipstick Strip Results/Need help!

In my (limited) experience pleco catfish usually do not do well in high alkaline waters (such as when you mix aquarium salt). Would be interested to know if others faced similar problems.

    Rainbow or gournami

Thanx everybody for all the advice. Based upon this I went to SuperPets today to buy a rainbow fish. However I got a male/female pair of dwarf gourami because 1) They were on special (CND $5.99 for the pair). 2) These were beautiful red/blue pair. 3) The sales lady, who in the past I had found...

    Rainbow or gournami

Hi, I am hoping to buy a colored fish to go with my livebearer tank. This is what I have: 45G: 6 mollies, 6 platies, 2 ID shark, 4 White Clouds, 4 Raspboras, 1 Paradise Fish (red/white stripes), 1 Inca snail, well planted, frequent water changes, all fish get along peacefully. I was thinking...

    Very bad luck with betta

Neuve, I agree with Electrobes, from personal experience. Bettas like smaller places. The largest aquarium it should be in is a 10g. It MAY survive in a 20g, but anything larger and bettas get stressed. I would advise moving it to a smaller aquarium.

    Tip for effective breeding?

Keep the aquarium temperature around 78 to 80 degrees (don't ever go over 82). High temperature promotes good growth in fry but they live shorter lives (since you are raising feeders it doesn't matter), conversely 76 degrees keeps growth slow but they live longer. The male is very important -...

    Vacuuming gravel

I used to vaccum regularly (once a month) but ever since I started growing live plants now its like every 4 months. I never move big rocks or plants (even plastic). Just a gentle overall. Another thing. Never vacum your whole tank if you vacum (what's the right spelling) often. Always do one...

Fat ... really really fat beta

Megalofyia, if you don't mind me asking, why is a big fish a problem? (sigh) I have been trying to get my irid sharks to grow big for about 6 months now, but they don't eat too much :|

What water conditioner do you prefer?

I use Hagen Aqua Plus (8 oz is about $7.5 CND at Super pets). I add it to bucket of the water, stir it and then pour it (gently) into the tank. Myself was looking for a cheaper alternative though.

    Feeding African Dwarf Frog

I went to the pet store tro buy some food (for the fish) and while there asked a guy about frogs. He told me they actually prefer those worms (I think they were called tubifex worms or something like that) to flake. On another note, I was thinking of getting one, but is it true they excrete...

I'm 'hexed' (60 gallon on sale at LFS)

I had a betta and 2 angels in a 10g and they did OK together. As soon as I put a natural tree (wisteria) the betta was even building bubble nests (pretty cool). I had an aerator and aqua clear mini filter. The betta ever survived my beginner attempts at new tank syndrome. However shortly after I...

Fish Tanks and Human Disease: FYI

Good article and fun followback from all. I used to avoid putting hands in water as much as possible because I was worried about my germs and oil (perspiration, etc) from harming the fish. Now it's the reverse!!!

    Cloudy Water

Yes, this is what I was also going to suggest but forgot. If you can handle it, do atleast 40% a day. Make sure your water has conditioner tha removes iron and phosphate in addition to chlorine.

    Cloudy Water

as you may know, algae needs light and minerals to grow. Since you can't put any new fish (I was thinking algae eaters) coz they might die, best is to shut out the light and minerals. YOu can wrap a piece of blanket or something around the tank, and not use the lights (fish won't be bothered)...

    water change with guppy fries

Hi.. due to the voracious appetite of my guppy mom and fries, I have been feeding the 10g tank 3 times a day. The fry are now 3 days old. I think I need to do a partial water change (I do it every saturday - 15%), but last weekend there were no fries. Someone told me if you water change, the...

    Guppy breeding filter

Thanks all who replied. I switched the filter to low power, and yesterday there were six fry, who seemed to not be bothered by the current. They all seem to hang around the floating plants though, except when I give food. Thanks again for your suggestions.

    Trouble With Neon Tetra

Hi, Neuve, Tetras should usually be ina group (if you have just one it may be more vulnerable to deseases). Also, many lfs have tetras that are really sick, or delicate. They lose a lot of tetras as they are not hardy at all. Your case looks like the tetra has a) some stomach problem b) was...

    Guppy breeding filter

The link seems to be down now, but I hope you guys(and gals) understand the filter. It sucks in water through a syphon, the filter media and stuff is hang-on on the back of the tank, and then it throws the water back into the aquarium.

    Guppy breeding filter

Hi, I have a 10g tank (cycled and all) which will now be used for guppy breeding. It used to be my older aquarium, but now all the stuff has been moved to a bigger 45g display tank, so I wanted to see if I could get guppies to breed. The 10g tank has some gravel, plastic plants, 1 male and 3...
