    Cyano-bacteria (Blue Green Algae)

I was also shying away from the plants because I had a goldfish and he chomps on just about everything. But if it is just normal algae, I am kinda happy that the tank can grow things. :) Maybe I will look for some more java moss / java fern when I head out to the LFS next. Thanks all.

    Cyano-bacteria (Blue Green Algae)

I spend some (probably too much) time sniffing at the top of my tank. All I can really smell is the funny electric smell from the transformer in the light box. The water smells like, well aquarium water. It's not nasty stinky or anything. I have some photos that I took last nite, here's a link...

    Glofish, Jan 4th, and you

I saw them at our LFS, $5.99 each, and I was thoroughly disappointed. I had been hoping they would be mind-blowingly pink like the photo on Tropical Fish Hobbyist a few months back. But, much like what others have said, they just seems to be zebra Danio's with a mild red tint, in both...

    Cyano-bacteria (Blue Green Algae)

Does anyone have any good photos of (non-magnified) blue green algae? I have some algae growth in my tank, and I am not 100% sure what it is. One of my friends says it's the big bad blue green, I am hoping it's the not so bad fuzzy kind. The tank is a 10 gallon with only one platy in it. It's...

    Consensus on PH?

Hmm, you are probably right, but, for me at least, manipulating the chemistry of the water I add would be more trouble than it's worth. Because I have limited space in my apartment, I have a very small tank (10gallon), and little changes in little tanks can mean big trouble. If I had a larger...

    Consensus on PH?

My $0.02, When I started setting up my tank, I wanted to know what kind of fish to get. I hold to the idea of buying fish for the water, rather than making the water for the fish. I went out and got a Tetra Laborett multi-test kit. The pH test runs in 0.5 increments, and my water...

    Clams

I have no experience with them, but I've seen a few posting about them: http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/clams.html And the usual Usenet search: http://groups.google.com/groups?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=freshwater+clams They do seem fairly neat, but from what I gather, the feeding of...

Danio fine to dead in 7 hours(?)

Yeah, that is what I had figured. Even after I did the water change, my test kit still shows positive for ammonia. :x Any one have a reccomendation of a test that is more accurate? My current test is from the Tetra Laborette, and it tests in .25mg/L increments, from 0.0 thru 1.5. I'd like to...

Danio fine to dead in 7 hours(?)

well even before the advice is give, i am doing it. I got home from work ,and as usual, I vacuumed out the QT tank, and did a small water change. But I also did a water change/ vacuum of the 10. I will run some water tests on it as soon as things settle down. Any one else have problems of water...

Danio fine to dead in 7 hours(?)

you would think so, but these levels rarely change. I have 2 known spikes, one when the goldfish had ICH, and the meds probably killed off the nascent bacteria colony. Since then the levels have been dropping to a steady reading, which never seems to change. I have a feeling that my kit may be...

    Platies dropping fry in quarantine

So far the pots are fine for me. :) knock on wood. I've got one that is approx 4 inches long lying down in my QT tank, and a larger one I "accidentally" broke to make some cave areas in my 10 gallon. They don't seem to have any problems being submerged, once they've become saturated. They do...

Danio fine to dead in 7 hours(?)

My 10 gal has been up and is at the very end of it's cycle, afaik. Last nite after cleaning up my QT tank, I did my usual inspection of this tank, which is inhabited by 1 Comet goldfish, and 2 gold zebra danios. They were active as normal, zipping around the tank, and coming to the top at one...

    Platies dropping fry in quarantine

Well, so far the fry are doing ok. I have them in a shallow dish, tomorrow, heading to LFS for some plants. Right now, I've got to figure out what killed one of the danios in my 10-gal. Last nite (3am Wed.) they were all fine, but at 11am, the larger one was upside-down, seemed paralyzed on the...

    Platies dropping fry in quarantine

When I get home from work, I will transfer them into a large shallow container, and I will see if I can fit some plastic plants into it. I am hoping that large surface area, combined with shallow water depth will provide adequate O2. I've been reading just about any and all threads I can find on...

    Platies dropping fry in quarantine

Hi all. I have been cycling my 10 gallon now since end of September. While monitoring the numbers on it, and as things settled in, I've decided to get some new fish, which like my water. Tap water runs at pH: 7.8, GH: 8 dH, KH: 4 dH, Nitrate: 5-10 ppm. There's not a lot to be done about the...
