depends on which american cichlids. some could be bullied them.... other can tear them apart. there r quite a few that would be fine with those fish too though. what cichlid species did u have in mind? tank size will also play a big role too.

one gourami will be fine by itself. she would actually prefer it. gouramis are solitary by nature, they only really socialize to spawn.
